Periscope, Meerkat Live Streaming Apps Aren’t As Popular As They Seem

Lately, live streaming apps Periscope and Meerkat have generated a lot of buzz in the field of social technology. Users are employing the apps to share thoughts with followers or stream live events like Coachella. Periscope users have even streamed broadcast TV events through the apps, like the Pacquaio-Mayweather fight and the season five premiere of Game of Thrones.

Celebrities have joined in the Meerkat and Periscope parties, as well. Madonna released her music video “Ghosttown” on Meerkat, only a few weeks after utilizing Snapchat for the same purpose. And director James Gunn used Periscope (which is now available on Android) to host a Q&A about the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy sequel.

Despite the seeming popularity of both live streaming apps, some companies doubt Meerkat and the Twitter-owned Periscope are all they’re cracked up to be. In fact, when Horizon Media’s WHY Group polled 3,000 Americans in a recent survey, it found on average 79% of U.S. adults have no interest in either live streaming app. The popularity of Periscope and Meerkat rises among the millennials aged 13-34, with 50% of them saying they are interested in one or both apps.

At the same time, basic awareness of the existence of Periscope and Meerkat is very low. WHY Group found that out of the surveyed millennials, only 13% had heard of Periscope and only 11% of them had heard of Meerkat. This is compared to 87% of millennials who had heard of Instagram, and 74% who’d heard of Snapchat. These awareness numbers of Periscope and Meerkat drop even more among all other age groups.

Granted, Periscope and Meerkat have only been out for a few months now, whereas social platforms like Instagram and Snapchat have been around longer. However, Horizon Media’s findings show how a large majority of the American public has little idea of and little care for the live streaming apps, despite how much Periscope and Meerkat are touted in the news.

Netflix Renews ‘Grace and Frankie’ For A Second Season

Netflix isn’t one to shy away from renewing its original series, and Grace and Frankie is no exception. The streaming video-on-demand service has ordered a second season for the Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin-led comedy, which debuted its first season on May 8, 2015.

Grace and Frankie stars Fonda and Tomlin as two spatting “friends” who must quickly learn to rely on each other for support after their husbands announce they’re in love and are planning to get married. The series is produced by Skydance Television and Marta Kauffman’s Okay Goodnight Productions. Kauffman, Fonda, Tomlin, Howard J. Morris, Paula Weinstein, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Marcy Ross serve as executive producers.

Apparently, the Grace and Frankie renewal is in part thanks to Miley Cyrus. “Let me say, it’s so awesome to do a show on Netflix,” said Kauffman to Deadline. “Two and a half weeks after we launched, Miley Cyrus does a tweet about your show, and they call and say, ‘We’d like to do a Season 2.’ So yes, there is a Season 2. We have Ted [Sarandos] and Miley to thank.”

Netflix originally announced Grace and Frankie back in March 2014, with Sarandos saying it was an honor to give Tomlin and Fonda “the opportunity to run riot on Netflix.” More recently, Netflix dropped the trailer for Grace and Frankie, alongside the season three sneak peek of Orange Is the New Black.

The Grace and Frankie renewal should come as little surprise to those familiar with Netflix. The streaming video platform has ordered new seasons for almost all of its original series, sometimes even before the most recent season has debuted on the platform. Other Netflix originals in the works for new seasons include Daredevil, House of Cards, and Bloodline.

Season two of Grace and Frankie will debut some time in 2016.

Here Is The Season Six Trailer For ‘Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee’

Jerry Seinfeld’s web series continues to roll along as the most popular offering within Crackle’s original content library. The season six trailer for Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee offers a look at Seinfeld’s upcoming round of casual conversations with funny people, which will commence on June 3rd.

The season six guest list, which Crackle revealed during its upfront presentation to advertisers, includes Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher, Steve Harvey, Julia-Louis Dreyfus, Jim Carrey, and newly-minted Daily Show host Trevor Noah. The trailer shows snippets from all six episodes; this season’s silliest twist occurs in Bill Maher’s episode, in which Seinfeld and the Real Time host drive around in an old-fashioned police car.

Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee has consistently served as a top performer for Crackle, which is owned and operated by Sony Pictures Television. Across its first three seasons, it scored more than 25 million views.

The sixth season was originally scheduled for a June 4th release. Officially, it will debut across Crackle’s distribution network at 11:30 PM EST on June 3rd.

Snapchat Hires New Programming Head To Boost Original Content Efforts

Snapchat is getting more serious about its original programming initiatives. To that end, the messaging app, whose claim to fame is content which disappears after a short time frame, has hired Marcus Wiley as new Head of Program Planning and Development.

Wiley will be in charge of the Snap Channel, Snapchat’s original programming vertical on its own content platform Discover. According to Deadline, Wiley will work with the Snap Channel team to develop short-form narrative series in scripted, musical, and experimental formats, aimed at the app’s 13- to 34-year-old users.

The Snap Channel programming developed by Wiley will succeed Snapchat’s previous original content initiatives, such as the Sasha Spielberg and Emily Goldwyn-starring Literally Can’t Even (which has been renewed for a second season on the ephemeral messaging platform). All new Snapchat original programming will live alongside branded content from Discover publishing partners such as ESPN, Vice, Comedy Central, and National Geographic.

Previous to Snapchat, Wiley worked as a producer, and as the Senior Vice President and co-head of comedy development at FOX. Snapchat’s new programming head was responsible for bringing several comedies like The Mindy Project (now set for a fourth season on Hulu) to the TV network. Wiley also boasts development experience from his position at Regency Television, and literary agency experience from a position at the William Morris Agency.

Snapchat currently claims its users watch a combined 2 billion videos every day on the app.

Brands Won’t Buy YouTube, Facebook Ads Without Better Viewability Testing

The video advertising world can’t stop talking about the issue of viewability, with marketers concerned about whether or not their ads are actually being seen. Some of them are even refusing to buy ads from publishers who won’t let them track their own viewability rates. And this means sites like YouTube and Facebook, who don’t allow third-party tracking systems, are losing out on ad dollars.

The statistics all say advertising on YouTube and Facebook is a smart move for brands. After all, Google just reported 91% of ads on YouTube are viewable (as compared to only 54% across the company’s other web properties). Facebook is on track to earn $3.8 billion from video ads by 2017, with brands like Heineken finding the reach and engagement on the social site to be equal to those of YouTube.

But that’s not enough for some brands like Kellogg and Kraft, according to an AdAge story. To these brands, it doesn’t matter that Google recently vowed to be more open about viewability verification with its advertising partners. Such companies want to be able to verify their ads’ viewability measures on their own through a third party.

“Third party verification is a critical component to responsively measure ad viewability,” explained Rino Scanzino, whose company GroupM has stopped buying ads from sites who restrict third-party viewability verification. “The vast majority of publishers agree to it and the few that don’t will be adversely impacted with significantly reduced spend or be completely removed from our preferred vendor list.”

Aaron Fetters, director of Kellogg’s global insights and solutions center, shared Scanzino’s sentiments. “We’ve always been clear with all partners across the digital ecosystem that as a principle we want to measure our investment and if we can’t measure it, it’s hard to justify the investment,” Fetters said. Kellogg already confirmed at the Association of National Advertisers Media Leadership Conference in March that its brand was not buying ads from YouTube based on Google’s stance on viewability measurements.

Kraft’s Vice President of Media, Data, and CRM Bob Rupczynski also confirmed his company has stopped spending ad dollars on publishers who won’t allow third-party viewability verification. While Rupczynski would not name specific publishers Kraft had refrained from doing business with, he did say all publishers should be “accountable equally” for viewability, no matter their size or reach.

“What we desire is a consistent way to measure the investments we place as marketers,” Fetters said. “We’re not yet today at a place where we have a consistent set of independent metrics.”

While a standard set of viewability metrics would be hard to enforce across the entire video advertising industry, many publishers are already supporting brands’ decisions to use third-party verification methods for ad viewability. AdAge notes Yahoo, AOL, Hulu, Fox, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, NBC, ABC, CBS, and Turner are all publishers willing to work with brands using viewability rating software from outside the publishers’ networks.

On YouTube’s part, the Google-owned site isn’t a stranger to the viewability debate. “Viewability has long been a concern for our clients, which is why we’ve supported industry-wide efforts and developed [Media Rating Council]-accredited technology, Active View, to measure and buy based on viewability across our products,” a Google spokeswoman said to AdAge. “Our partners have been very receptive to our focus on viewability and we’re continuing to work with them to make sure their measurement needs are addressed.”

Likewise, Facebook noted its own efforts in the ongoing viewability debate. “We are committed to providing value for advertisers — we don’t want them to spend a dollar with us if it isn’t driving value,” said a Facebook rep. “That is why we use viewed, not served, impressions to measure ad delivery across desktop and mobile.” The social site is also working with the Media Rating Council to gain accreditation for its video ad technology.

Despite Kellogg and Kraft’s stances on viewability measurements, some brands like Wendy’s have no problem advertising on YouTube and Facebook. Brandon Rhoten, the food chain’s VP of Digital and Social Media, said, “More measurement is good, and third party measurement is best, but beyond that we find the inventory at Google to be valuable, so no concerns here that are making us doubt working with them.”

Netflix Will Host Its Own ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Fan Convention In New York

Netflix is getting into the convention industry. The streaming platform will bring OrangeCon, based on its hit original series Orange Is the New Black, to New York City on June 11, 2015.

Hosted at Skylight Clarkson SQ, OrangeCon is an invitation-only convention arriving just one day before the third season of Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black series premieres. The event will boast autograph signings, a special screening, panels with cast and crew from the Netflix show, and more.

Fans will be able to meet many of their favorite stars who are confirmed to attend, including Taylor Schilling, Laura Prepon, Uzo Aduba, Laverne Cox, Natasha Lyonne, Danielle Brooks, Taryn Manning, Samira Wiley, Dascha Polanco, Selenis Leyva, Yael Stone, Michael Harney, Nick Sandow, and Adrienne Moore.

Netflix said fans can receive all updates for OrangeCon by following @OITNB on Twitter, Instagram, or Tumblr. Fans will also have a chance to win tickets to the event by following any of these social media accounts.

Orange Is the New Black has certainly proved a hit among viewers and critics alike, but it isn’t Netflix’s only popular series worthy of an event. With shows like House of Cards, Daredevil, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt also consistently attracting viewers and boasting raving fan bases, we wouldn’t be surprised if Netflix eventually hosted a larger convention for all its well-loved titles.

Hulu Renews Paranormal Comedy ‘Deadbeat’ For Third Season

Hulu has given the green light for another season of one of its original series. The streaming video platform renewed the paranormal comedy Deadbeat, starring Tyler Labine, for a third season.

Deadbeat centers around the laid-back, pot-smoking Kevin (Labine), who has the ability to commune with ghosts and spirits. Unlike most supernatural-themed series, Deadbeat doesn’t throw Kevin into an eternal battle with the other-worldly beings. Instead, Labine’s character serves as a medium who helps ghosts finish what they couldn’t accomplish in life, like getting laid.

Deadbeat is a uniquely imaginative and charming series,” said Craig Erwich, Hulu’s Senior Vice President and Head of Content, in a release. “We are very happy to bring it back for another hilarious season and look forward to sharing new ghostly stories.”

Hulu released the first season of Deadbeat back in April 2014, with eight of the ten episodes available exclusively on Hulu Plus. The second season of the original series was released on April 20, 2015, an appropriate date considering its significance in the pot community.

No official premiere date has been announced for season three of Deadbeat as of yet.

AOL UK, The Guardian Team Up For Video Distribution Partnership

AOL will soon have more international eyeballs on its video content. The UK branch of the digital publishing giant has added London’s Guardian News and Media, best known for its news site The Guardian, as a video content and publishing partner.

Under the agreement, AOL will syndicate Guardian’s original video content across AOL On’s network for greater global reach. Guardian will also have access to AOL’s entire video library of content created by the media giant or its other content publishers. Guardian News will be able to publish AOL On video across its international news sites and digital properties.

“AOL is committed to producing premium content that captures the imagination of consumers,” said AOL’s Head of International Graham Moysey in a release. “Curation and distribution go hand-in-hand with great content and we’re delighted the Guardian has chosen AOL On as a partner to drive even greater audiences to their content.”

The Guardian deal comes hot on the heels of AOL’s announcement of its acquisition by Verizon on May 12, 2015. Verizon’s purchase of the digital media publisher was reportedly based on AOL’s high-quality video ad technology. However, Verizon could also end up going big in online video thanks to AOL’s strong history of creating premium video content.

AOL On currently boasts almost 50 original series, and more than 1 billion video views a month across AOL’s entire network.

Netflix Reportedly Courting French Actor Gerard Depardieu For ‘Marseille’

Netflix may have a main actor for its upcoming French series. According to Variety, French actor Gerard Depardieu is in talks to play a leading role in the upcoming Netflix original series Marseille.

Penned by Carlos writer Dan Franck, the eight-episode Marseille follows the story of Robert Taro, the mayor of the town of Marseille for 25 years. Taro has chosen his successor, a young and eager candidate, but the upcoming elections will pit them against each other in a vicious battle to earn (or keep) the title of mayor. Depardieu, who is famous for roles in films like The Man in the Iron Mask and Life of Pi, could play Taro if he joins Netflix’s Marseille project.

Netflix originally announced Marseille back in August 2014, with Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos calling the House of Cards-esque series a “diabolically smart” fictional take on Marseille’s politics. So far, little else has been announced about the Netflix series, other than episode directors (Florent-Emilio Siri and Samuel Benchetrit) and a tentative release date in late 2015.

Variety caught wind of Depardieu’s possible role in the upcoming Marseille series via Europe1 News. Netflix declined to comment on Variety’s report.

Global Streaming Video Subscriptions Will Triple By 2019

Juniper Research has some new findings which support the ever-growing popularity of video streaming services. The UK-based mobile and online research firm believes that by 2019, the number of global streaming video subscriptions will triple to reach 332.2 million accounts.

In its recent study, Juniper notes how the 332.2 million global subscriptions is a significant jump from 2014’s 92.1 million video service subscriptions. The total revenue generated from these subscriptions accounts will hit almost $32 billion by 2019, up from 2014’s nearly $8 billion. The research firm also predicts ad dollars spent on these subscription services will almost quadruple by 2019, with IPTV subscriptions (like AT&T’s U-verse or CenturyLink’s Prism) growing more than 70% by the same year.

“We believe demand for high quality video delivery and viewing experiences will drive the uptake of large screen sizes, as well as the cost effective methods of turning ‘dumb TVs’ smart via USB sticks and the like,” said Juniper analyst Sam Smith to StreamDaily. Smith also explained how the introduction of more video-on-demand services will result in consumers having “more than one subscription per household.”

Smith clarified Juniper’s research did not include any data from China due to complications with that country’s streaming laws. However, the analyst believes both Japan and South Korea will have massive impacts on VOD growth in Asia due to the countries’ high-quality broadband. And should Netflix actually manage to break into the Chinese market, global streaming video subscriptions will only continue to grow.

You can sign up to download the streaming video subscriptions research on Juniper’s website.
