CBS, Apple To Launch Showtime Streaming Service In July

CBS will bring a new over-the-top service to the market. The Eye network has confirmed it will launch a Showtime video subscription service in early July 2015, with Apple signed on as the service’s first distribution partner.

The upcoming service, which is slated to work over broadband internet, will cost $10.99 per month and will include access to Showtime’s library of shows. The service will be available to owners of Apple devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs (much like how HBO’s Now subscription service worked at launch). CBS may pursue other distribution partners in the future.

“Going over-the-top means Showtime will be much more accessible to tens of millions of potential new subscribers,” said CBS Corporation’s President and CEO Leslie Moonves, as reported by Variety. “Across CBS, we are constantly finding new ways to monetize our programming by capitalizing on opportunities presented by technology. This works best when you have outstanding premium content – like we do at Showtime – and when you have a terrific partner like Apple – which continues to innovate and build upon its loyal customer base.”

“We’re excited to offer Apple customers Showtime’s live channels and extensive on demand library of great TV shows and movies, without a cable or satellite subscription,” added Apple’s SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue. The Apple executive also explained how his company and CBS hope to make purchasing Showtime as “simple as buying an app.”

CBS started entertaining the idea of a Showtime service back in November 2014. Now, the upcoming service will join CBS’s previous foray into that market. The network launched its All-Access service, with access to many past and present CBS titles, in October 2014 for $5.99 per month. Since then, CBS has revealed All-Access subscribers watch twice as much content as non-subscribers. The service currently boasts over 100,000 subscribers.

The yet-unnamed Showtime subscription service will arrive in July 2015, likely around July 12 when the network’s two shows Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex debut their new season premieres.

We couldn’t be more thrilled Frank Cooper has joined us to take on that exciting challenge.”

BuzzFeed claims 200 million unique views per month from around the globe. The company’s video content alone drives 1 billion monthly views.

Turkish Airlines’ ‘Kobe Vs. Messi’ Voted Best Ad From YouTube’s First Decade

In May, YouTube announced a competition through which it would select the best ad from its first decade of existence. Instead of allowing viewers to vote for any ad from the past ten years, YouTube narrowed the selection down to 20 videos and asked its users to choose a favorite from among that group.

The voters ultimately decided on an ad driven by a pair of sporting celebrities. YouTube has announced Turkish Airlines’ “Kobe Vs. Messi: The Selfie Shootout,’ as the winner of its branded video competition.

The “Selfie Shootout” video features the two sports superstars as they jet around the world attempting to one-up each other with increasingly extravagant selfies. Since its release in 2013, the “Seflie Shootout” has become one of the most viewed branded videos of all-time, generating more than 140 million hits.

In claiming the top spot in YouTube’s competition, the “Selfie Shootout” beat out several other popular and beloved spot. The second and third spots went to a pair of Super Bowl spots: Volkswagen’s “The Force” and Always’ “Like A Girl,” respectively. Volvo’s “Epic Split” and Dove’s “Real Beauty Sketches” rounded out the top five.

Combined, these five videos have been watched for over 7.7 million hours,” reads a blog post from Google. “That’s over 875 years people chose to spend watching ads! Congrats to all of the winners and nominees and thanks again to all who voted.”

A second blog post outlines ten insights that can be gleaned from YouTube’s most popular ads. Spoiler alert: The most important tip of all is “More Jean-Claude Van Damme.”

Delta Among Airlines Offering Streaming Video At 35,000 Feet

Delta has designed its new safety video to appeal to customers who enjoy watching videos on the Internet, but as it turns out, that’s not the airline’s only overture to its connected clientele. Business Insider reporter Antonio Villas-Boas, who recently flew Delta from Atlanta to New York City, chronicled his experience with what he calls “Netflix in the sky.” As it turns out, Delta is one of several airlines offering its customers a streaming video service that plays through devices like iPads.

As Villas-Boas explains, he discovered the “Delta Studio” service after connection to the plane’s in-flight WiFi. From there, he was invited to browse a selection of movies and TV shows, including Birdman (which isn’t even available on Netflix Instant) and Top Gear.

Business Insider’s commenters were quick to point out that Delta isn’t alone in its decision to implement an airborne streaming video service; Alaska Airlines, United, and Southwest all offer their own WiFi-enabled services. I can confirm that a recent Southwest flight I took invited flyers to stream video on their mobile devices. At the same time, a lack of seat-back or drop-down screens prevent flyers from watching in-flight video in the traditional manner.

Some may see this transition to streaming video as a cost-cutting maneuver from airliners, but there’s no denying that viewing movies and TV shows on HD-enabled mobile devices is a much more aesthetically pleasant experience than low-quality “seat-back viewing.” For that reason, expect these Netflixes in the sky to become much more prevalent, and remember to charge your devices before long flights.

Cable TV Subscribers Aren’t Too Fond Of Their Service Providers

News just keeps getting worse for cable and pay-tv providers. The most recent American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) found consumers are more displeased than ever with their cable providers and their respective services.

According to the Index, subscription television services tied with internet service providers with an average score of 63 out of 100, based on feedback from about 14,000 surveyed customers in Q1 of 2015. This score of 63 was the worst given out of all 43 industries included in the ACSI. When subscription TV and internet providers were bundled with other information services like computer software and wireless or fixed phone line providers, the ACSI found customers gave these companies a 68.8 score, the lowest level among these categories in the last seven years.

The most notable drop in customer satisfaction came from cable TV and internet providers Comcast and Time Warner (who proposed a merger deal in 2014 but eventually called it off in April 2015). Comcast, which ACSI noted is already one of the lowest-rated providers, dropped its score 10% to 54 out of 100. Time Warner earned “the distinction as least-satisfying company in the Index” with a 9% drop, to hit a low score of 51.

“There was a time when pay TV could get away with discontented users without being penalized by revenue losses from defecting customers, but those days are over,” ACSI Chairman Claes Fornell said in a release. “Today people have more alternatives than ever before. Consumer abandonment of pay TV is shaking up the industry and lower satisfaction could mean even more cord cutting by subscribers ahead.”

ACSI attributes these overall drops in customer satisfaction scores to providers’ poor customer service, low-quality services/broadband, rising prices, lack of available options, and required contract terms. “Customers resent being locked into service contracts, and are not happy with what they see as unreliable service, slow broadband Internet speeds, and rising subscription prices,” the Index noted.

You can read more of the ACSI data and findings via the official press release on the ACSI site.

YouTube Star Connor Franta To Be Honored By Thirst Project Organization

Connor Franta will be officially acknowledged for some of his good deeds. The YouTube celebrity, who has over 4.5 million subscribers on his channel, will receive the Governor’s Award at the Thirst Project’s sixth annual Thirst Gala on June 30, 2015, as a recognition for the work he’s done for the organization.

The non-profit Thirst Project was founded in 2008 and has a goal to bring fresh, clean drinking water to the African nation of Swaziland by 2022. So far, the organization has already provided more than 285,000 people in 13 different countries with safe drinking water over the last six years.

Franta initially got involved in the Thirst Project in 2014 after meeting founder Seth Maxwell for lunch. Franta, who was about to turn 22 years old, set up a Prizeo campaign to benefit the Thirst Project. Instead of asking his YouTube fans for birthday gifts, the vlogger asked his viewers to donate to the Prizeo campaign and offered to meet some fans for coffee as incentive. Franta wanted to raise $120,000 for the Thirst Project; in the end, he managed to bring in $230,000 in just 30 days.

“With the large platform that I have, I think it’s very important to utilize it for better and for change,” Franta told The Hollywood Reporter, who originally broke the story. “I think it’s really positive to be an example to my younger audience. Hopefully I can instill those same life lessons in them.”

After Franta successfully raised over $230k, he visited Swaziland to see the wells his campaign had helped build. “The most impactful part was when I saw the new water source versus the old,” he explained. “Water from the old source was green and brown, and it was all that they had.”

Since then, Franta has continued to support the Thirst Project through his own fund-raising venture. The best-selling author and vlogger, a former member of YouTube supergroup O2L, debuted his own line of coffee called Common Culture. For every bag purchased by consumers, Common Culture donates $1 directly to the Thirst Project.

The Thirst Project will also give a Pioneering Spirit Award to film producer Wyck Godfrey (known for the Twilight saga, The Maze Runner series, and the film adaptations of the VlogbrothersJohn Green books The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns). Godfrey traveled to Africa with his family and Maxwell, where they saw the impact of clean wells on communities. Since then Godfrey has championed the Thirst Project and even enlisted acting talent from his movies to product PSAs about the youth-based organization.

The Thirst Project Gala will take place on June 30 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

YouTube Head Of Business Calls Music Key Delay “Nothing Too Serious”

Ten days ago, YouTube sent an email to users who signed up to use the beta version of the site’s Music Key service, which it first unveiled last November. In the email, YouTube announced its plan to extend Music Key’s beta period by four months; from that decision, outlets like The Verge inferred that YouTube needs some extra time to eliminate specific issues before it offers Music Key to the public.

For those of us who have followed Music Key during its long, drawn-out development period, the news of any delay is ominous. After all, the first time we heard about a Music Key setback, it was only supposed to last a few months, but YouTube didn’t officially announce its subscription-based streaming music service until almost a year later. Given that history, it’s easy to wonder how much fine-tuning YouTube actually wants to do.

Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s Head of Content and Business Operations, does not believe potential Music Key users should worry about the delay. “We’re still going through some development,” he told Music Ally. “The launch is coming in a few months from here: there’s a little bit of a delay, but nothing too serious. We got a lot of really great feedback, and thought it was better to address most of it than to launch without [addressing] it… We’re a lot smarter about the product from those heaviest users.”

At the same time, Kyncl didn’t share many specific details about Music Key’s progress. “I can’t promise the date: it’s already going a little too far even saying ‘a few months’ – if you’re delayed another few months you keep getting asked about it,” he said.

Music Key, which will compete with existing services like Spotify (which has its own plans to step into YouTube’s territory) will offer its subscribers a one-stop platform where they will find YouTube’s massive collection of music videos. A free tier will provide users with basic access, while subscribers who pay $8-10 per month will unlock an ad-free streaming experience and other premium options.

This two-tiered model is also a feature YouTube will soon add to its main site. In a recent letter to its creators, it discussed its plan to remove ads for viewers who pay a monthly subscription fee. Music Ally asked Kyncl about those plans, too, but he mainly stressed the site’s focus on its current ad-supported model. “Our free ad-supported business is growing incredibly fast. We’ll always have that: that’s our core, and we’ll never stop focusing on it. It’s in Google’s DNA to be in the ad-supported business,” he said. “Subscription is an add-on. It’s an adjacent business that we’re building.”

While Music Key is not yet available to the public, interested users can submit their email addresses in order to receive updates as the service nears its launch.

Fusion Partners With YouTube’s Spaces To Produce Comedy Programming

Cable TV channel Fusion describes its target audience as “a young, diverse, and inclusive millennial generation.” To effectively reach that generation, Fusion needs to connect with its viewers on the web, and thanks to a new partnership, it will be able to create a plethora of new videos designed for online distribution. Fusion has teamed up with the YouTube Spaces, 3 Arts Entertainment, and a number of well known comedy organizations to launch a digital studio called F-Comedy.

According to a press release, F-Comedy “will produce topical short-form content for a young, multicultural audience that could be developed into other formats including long-form comedy series, comedy news-talk shows and more.” Much of this content will be produced at YouTube Space LA, where Fusion has taken up a production residency.

Fusion’s list of partners for F-Comedy includes a number of comedy hotspots, including Upright Citizens Brigade and The Stand. In addition, existing creators from within the Fusion network will contribute to the new initiative. On the F-Comedy YouTube channel, for example, visitors can find clips from Like, Share, Die, an animated series Fusion recently launched alongside Mondo Media.

“We have understood from the beginning that comedy and satire are incredibly powerful tools to connect with our target audience and that it must be at the core of our content offering,” said Fusion CEO Isaac Lee in the release. “We know that traditional methods of identifying talent and delivering content are changing every day, and our comedy studio brings together leaders in comedy and short-form storytelling arenas to generate content that informs and provokes while also being highly entertaining.”

Fusion is certainly no stranger to the online video world. In particular, it is very active on Snapchat, where it has launched several series alongside stars like Sofia Vergara.

In addition to F-Comedy, Fusion’s YouTube presence also includes its main hub, where it shares both companions for its TV programs and made-for-digital releases. That channel has more than nine million views to date.
