Spotify Is Testing A TikTok-Like Music Discovery Tool

Spotify is the latest platform to incorporate the TikTok format, following successful adaptations by the likes of YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat in the form of Shorts, Reels, and Spotlight.

Spotify is testing a version of the format that would ostensibly serve as a way for users to discover new music via an endless vertical scroll of music videos.

The feature, aptly dubbed Discover, enables users to scroll through clips and either ‘like’ (and add to a list of liked songs) or skip. A three-dot menu also brings up additional information about each track. The feature appears as the fourth tab in the navigation bar at the bottom of the app, Techcrunch reports. The test was first spotted by tech insider Chris Messina.

The videos playing aren’t standard music videos, per Techcrunch, but those created via a Spotify tool called Canvas (pictured above), which enables artists to make short looping visuals that Spotify likens to “album artwork for the streaming age.”

“At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience,” the company confirmed to Techcrunch. “Some of those tests end up paving the way for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning. We don’t have any further news to share at this time.”
