The age of tweet editing is upon us

OK, internet, you win.

After years upon years of people ceaselessly begging Twitter to let them edit their tweets, it’s finally giving in.

For now, the ability to change your tweets post-posting is only available to people willing to shell out five bucks a month for Twitter Blue (which, if you haven’t been keeping up with that, seems to be not a lot of people). But Twitter said it eventually plans to roll the thing out to all users.

So there may be a future where, instead of seeing timelines full of “haha oops typo” addendums and sick dunks spoiled by tragic autocorrect betrayals, we see timelines full of tweets labeled “Last edited…”

That label is a key part of the feature. Other key bits: Only you can edit your tweets, and you can only do so within 30 minutes of tweeting them.

Once you make a change, the tweet will be marked with a “Last edited” label that, when tapped, shows a chronological record of changes made.

“We’re hoping that with the availability of Edit Tweet, tweeting will feel more approachable and less stressful,” the company said in a statement. “You should be able to participate in the conversation in a way that makes sense to you.”

Twitter didn’t say when it plans to expand editing access to the general user base.

It’s worth noting that Twitter Blue also has a second editing-esque feature called Undo Tweet, where users can recall any tweet within 30 seconds of posting, change it, and re-post it. That tool came out a little over a year ago.
