Snapchatters Can Now Add Audio From ‘SNL’, ‘Jaws’, ‘Billy Madison’ Following NBCUniversal Pact

Snap has inked a licensing deal with NBCUniversal to add audio clips from its film and TV catalog to Snapchat’s ‘Sounds‘ library — which creators can use in their creation of Snaps, Stories, and Spotlight videos.

Globally, Snapchatters can now add audio clips from 40 Year Old Virgin, Back to the Future, Billy Madison, Bridesmaids, Jaws, Scarface, Shrek, The Office, Parks And Recreation, Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock, Saved By The Bell, and beyond.

“NBCUniversal has an iconic catalog and we know Snapchatters will love adding quotes from their favorite movies and series to their Snaps to help perfectly express the moment,” Ben Schwerin, Snap’s SVP of content and partnerships, said in a statement.

When users harness Sounds, a swipe-up option appears at the bottom of the screen with additional information, including key art and title. As with music, a ‘Play This Sound’ link will appear when users opt for NBCUniversal audio, taking them to any streaming platforms on which the full TV shows or movies are available.

Snap launched its Sounds tool in October 2020, which it says has since been used to create 521 million videos that have netted 31 billion views — nearly 45% of which were sent as direct messages.

In addition to NBCUniversal, Snap has audio deals in place with Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Merlin, Sony Music Publishing, Universal Music Publishing Group, Warner Chappell, Kobalt, BMG, the NMPA, DistroKid, and thousands of individual songwriters and music publishers, it says.
