High school prom is one of countless casualties of our current coronavirus pandemic. And so TikTok, where teens are already gathering en masse, is seeing to it that they can celebrate in isolation.
The platform is hosting a so-called #TikTokProm all week, comprising in-app hashtag challenges, nightly live stream events at 8 pm ET with creators and celebrities, and surprise musical performances. Every TikTok user received an ad invitation when opening the app, beginning on April 21.
On Tuesday, creator Sarah Hambley taught viewers how to create a DIY prom fashions, while this evening Lachlan Watson, Tyshon Lawrence , and Wot Dennis will share beauty tips. Tomorow, photogs Bonnie Rodriguez and Bryant Eslava will showcase some new creative effects that TikTok has created for the occasion, including a new #PromPortrait background (which is being launched in collab with John Krasinski and his new digital series, Some Good News, as modeled above). A second effect, dubbed #VirtualProm, transports users to a classic prom setting in a high school gym with decorations.
On Friday, Ayo & Teo and Michael Le will help viewers practice their moves with a specially-choreographed dance and tutorial, respectively. And finally, #TikTokprom will culminate on Friday with a live DJ set from Diplo, who will welcome Dillon Francis and other surprise musical guests. Just as with regular prom, TikTok notes, attendees will be able to engage with DJs and request songs. Prior to the event’s start, beauty guru Patrick Starrr will appear on the livestream countdown.
In addition to providing a fun outlet for teens, the event will also have a charitable component, with callouts for viewers to donate to MusiCares — an organization that helps artists, songwriters, and other music industry players. Earlier this month, TikTok TikTok pledged a total of $250 million for coronavirus relief, including $125 million in ad credits for small businesses and NGOs.
