YouTube Testing New App Layout With Three Featured Comments Directly Under Videos

YouTube is continuing to toy with the locale of comments on its mobile app.

After an experiment where it hid comments behind a button in June, YouTube is now testing a display that makes comments more accessible — right below the videos, as part of an A/B test, per Android Police. Traditionally, comments have been located at the bottom of the page on the YouTube app, below the ‘Up Next’ suggestions.

Android Police reports that three featured comments are now being displayed directly below video descriptions. Tapping on any of the three will open up the full comments section and join the discussion. How are the three comments chosen? Google

says that recency is a factor, as is whether the comment has been pinned by creators — though YouTube will only show pinned comments that have less than 140 characters, don’t contain links, and don’t appear to be self-promotional.

That said, even if pinned comments don’t meet the aforementioned criteria, they will still appear at the top of the comments section when it is opened in full. A note at the bottom of the ‘Up Next’ section now informs users that their comments have been moved upward.
