Snapchat Uses Live Streaming To Highlight Top Moments From 2018 Winter Olympics

In 2016, Snapchat and NBC struck a content partnership related to that year’s Summer Olympics. The deal proved to be a fruitful one, with the broadcaster pulling in 2.2 billion views on Snapchat content it shared from Rio.

Two years later, the Olympics are back, and Snapchat is once again hoping to be a popular destination for coverage and highlights. Thanks to its latest pact with NBCUniversal, it will be home to daily live streams that will broadcast top moments from the Pyeongchang Winter Games.

The streams will go live on NBC’s Snapchat Discover channel and will run for up to six minutes apiece. All of the broadcasts will take place during primetime in the United States, with the first one occurring on February 10.

Live streaming is a

new feature for Snap, which recently made its Discover section more distinct through a much-derided redesign. Though some of Snap’s competitors, such as Instagram, allow users to shoot live video, the app has chosen to limit the use of its new broadcasts by only making them available to brand partners.

Snapchat and NBCUniversal are frequent collaborators. Last year, they teamed up to launch an original programming venture that featured indie filmmakers Mark and Jay Duplass among its partners.

Beyond Snap, the 2018 Winter Olympics will also be available via several other digital platforms. YouTube, for example, is streaming the Games through its YouTube TV skinny bundle and is sharing highlights across several channels. In the US, viewers can head to the NBC Sports channel to find daily recaps.
