Snapchat Creating ‘Stories Everywhere’ Feature To Distribute Content Across The Web (Report)

Snapchat may be looking to move beyond the hermetically sealed walls of its mobile app with a new feature called Stories Everywhere.

Snap has hired former News Corp global video head Rahul Chopra to determine how to best distribute Snapchat’s glut of user-generated Stories outside its app for the very first time. The company is discussing giving users the ability to share Stories on other social platforms, according to Cheddar, as well as embed them on the web via a proprietary player. The decision to make Stories available outside of Snapchat arrives as the app’s user growth has stalled in the wake of its massive IPO.

Snap is also considering licensing its user-generated Stories — which are curated by algorithms and Snap employees — to other platforms for breaking news and sports coverage. In terms of its content goals for 2018, Snap wants to double down on news, according to an internal memo obtained by Cheddar

At the same time that Snap is honing Stories Everywhere, the company has expanded its content team under VP Nick Bell. Former Mitu chief product officer Mike Su will now oversee all content-related product development at Snap, while Snap’s Michael DiBenedetto will now lead the content team’s strategy and operations — a newly-created position. Additionally, former NowThis president Sean Mills will oversee all programming for Snapchat’s newly-redesigned Discover page (in addition to original content), while Josh Stone will lead media company relations.
