Digital Advertising Produced $49.5 Billion In Revenue In 2014

Each year, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC US) team up to provide a report on the growth of digital advertising industry. The 2014 edition of the IAB Internet Advertising Revenue Report has now been released, and it details a banner year in which digital advertisements generated $49.5 billion in revenue.

The report breaks down the $49.5 billion across multiple categories. Search advertising, which generated nearly $19 billion in revenue in 2014, provided 38% of the total gross. Display advertising was the second-biggest contributor at 27%, with the rapidly-growing mobile advertising industry coming in third at 25%.

The IAB made sure to note the particular growth of online video advertising revenue, which rose 17% from $2.8 billion in 2013 to $3.3 billion in 2014. $1.5 billion of that revenue was generated in the first half of the year; between July and December, a 20% increase generated another $1.8 billion.

“Marketers clearly recognize that consumers are leading mobile-first lives and are investing their ad dollars accordingly,” said Randall Rothenberg, President and CE of IAB, in a release. “The news of digital video’s double-digit growth is also no surprise. Brands and agencies are clamoring to get into the upcoming Digital Content NewFronts, where they will experience the latest in storytelling in sight, sound and motion.”

The total $49.5 billion gross represents a 16% over 2013’s total of $42.8 billion, which was itself 17% higher than 2012’s total. Long story short: Digital advertising is growing by leaps and bounds, and we expect IAB to report more record-breaking growth next year.
