The latest Comscore US Online Video Rankings revealed a strong October for the online video industry. Viewers watched 49 billion videos in October, an increase of more than three million over September.
The surge was fueled by strong months for Facebook and AOL, which ranked as the 2nd and 3rd most viewed online video platforms, respectively. Both surged over a billion views in October, Facebook to 1.36 million and AOL to 1.27 million. YouTube, as usual, continues to dominate the field. It picked up 400 million more views in October than in September, rising to more than 16.5 billion total hits. Average viewing time also rose by more than 80 minutes per user.
In the advertising department, AOL held serve as the #1 video ad network in terms of impressions, crossing four million monthly hits
for the first time. It also scored more than 1.8 million ad minutes last month, also tops among all competitors. Ads continue to account for one third of all online video views. While VEVO continues to lead multi-channel networks in terms of both US uniques and US views, Maker Studios and Fullscreen flip-flopped for the second straight month, with the latter network scoring 31.5 million uniques to the former’s 30.4 million. After falling off the charts completely in September, Machinima rose back to ninth and boast a higher average engagement than any other network.
All in all, it wasn’t the most exciting month for the online video industry, unless you’re AOL, in which case things continue to be very exciting.
