Funny or Die, Now With 5 Million Twitter Followers, To Produce Films

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay‘s Funny or Die recently celebrated its five millionth Twitter follower, and the online video portal is ringing in the milestone with a notable change. Company CEO Dick Glover has announced a partnership with production company Scott Pictures. The alliance will allow Funny or Die to begin producing feature films alongside its continuing slate of comedy shorts.

Scott Pictures has previously produced several high-profile Hollywood films, including The Lincoln Lawyer and Love in the Time of Cholera. While Ferrell and Funny or Die have produced films in the past, but new features will officially be under the Funny or Die umbrella. “We have been looking for the right strategic partner to create a new model comedy film production, marketing and distribution.  Scott Pictures is the perfect partner for this,” said Glover. “We can’t wait to get busy producing the slate of films and getting them in front of our huge audience of fans and followers.”

The film origins of Funny or Die’s founders make it an ideal web studio to make the jump to features. The website’s videos continue to feature star talent, including a recent video where Chris Kattan starred as a version of The Dark Knight Rises’ Bane who gets agitated when his plans to take over the Super Bowl go awry.

While we can expect Funny or Die Pictures to focus on theatrical releases, perhaps it will reserve some films for online release. After all, with five million Twitter followers, Ferrell’s web baby has a large built-in audience. At the very least, the website’s short will bring online audiences plenty of funny and only a little bit of die.
