Toyota, Budweiser Super Bowl Ads Win On The Internet

As is often the case, there was no clear-cut ‘best’ Super Bowl commercial during this year’s game. Still, online outlets have been quick to choose ads they felt “won” the Super Bowl. By some metrics, Toyota scored the game’s top ad with its ‘Rav4 Genie’ spot. By others, Budweiser‘s yearly Clydesdale spot took the cake.

A blog post on statistically-inclined blog Visible Measures has declared Toyota the winner thanks to the company’s 16.2 million views across all online platforms. This may seem like an easy way to determine which ad made the largest dent on the Internet, but it is still a very crude measure. After all, many of those views came via pre-roll advertisements (a trend within Visible Measures’ top 10), and Toyota benefited by posting its ad well before the Super Bowl

. In coming days, another ad may soon pass Toyota based on upcoming paid views or general viral success.

USA Today’s Ad Meter, on the other hand, offers a viewer-oriented take on Super Bowl ad ratings, and by that measure, Budweiser’s Clydesdale ad was voted the most popular spot, with Tide’s ‘Miracle Stain’, Ram’s fantastically shot ‘Farmer’, and Doritos’ ‘Fashionista Daddy’ also claiming high spots. To exemplify the fickle nature of views, only one spot from Visible Measures’ top 10–Audi’s ‘Prom’ spot–also found a home in USA Today’s top 10.

The commercial on many  YouTube fans’ minds was the Wonderful Pistachios spot featuring Psy, but it has not gained much love from online viewers. Maybe they should’ve stuck with Ryan Higa after all.
