Must Attend (and FREE) Online Video Events at Social Media Week LA

Earlier this week I discussed Tubefilter‘s collaboration with Social Media Week Los Angeles, a weeklong celebration of the interwoven nature of the World Wide Web. I told you about a lot of keynote speakers with lengthy resumes in the digital media space, but let’s be honest; Tubefilter is a video news site, and you guys are here because that’s what you want to read about. Therefore, I think it’s important to let everyone know that there will be a large online video and entertainment focus at SMWLA from Wednesday, September 26 to Friday, September 28. There will be noted digital media innovators speaking, a full-fledged social media film festival, and much more.

If you’re a lazy reader, here’s the shortlist. More detailed descriptions complete with excellent prose below:

For starters, there will be several YouTube employees hanging around on Wednesday to talk about the Partner program, which has turned thousands of people into full-time video celebrities. If you’ve got a big idea you’re looking to market or if you are just curious about how the program worse, you will find the talk very engaging.

That night, head on over to the Egyptian Theatre for a screening of the new documentary produced by Zach Galifianakis, Craigslist Joe. If you haven’t heard of this crazy film, you’ve got to check it out. Seriously, watch that trailer. There’s no way you won’t be intrigued. And you can get a chance to join Zach Galifianakis’ wolfpack.

We cover Machinima a lot around these parts, so I think it’s very exciting that their CEO, Allen Debevoise, will be part of a Thursday panel titled ‘The New Hollywood’, focusing on the evolution of video sharing platforms. He’ll be joined by, among others, Steve Woolf of Blip and Sarah Penna

from Big Frame, two companies we certainly love to cover here at Tubefilter.

Those guys (and one gal) aren’t the only big names who will be showing up on Thursday. There’s also a fireside chat with Anthony Zuiker, another Tubefilter favorite. Anthony’s been busy on Yahoo in 2012, so if you’re interested in hearing from someone who’s making inroads into the online video industry, or if you just want to dive into the thought processes of a content creator, he’s your guy.

That night, LA will also play host to the Unruly Social Media Film Festival, where some of the most shared videos of the past year will be on display. If you like online video (and again, you’re on Tubefilter, so I sure hope you do!) you’re sure to see some of your favorites screened.

On Friday, we’ve got two overlapping afternoon events. At iO/LA, there’s a panel on live streaming, so if you’re into that part of the online video culture, you should check it out. At the same time, you could be over at the Egyptian Theater, where representatives from the Grammys, Oscars and Emmys will discuss the interaction between social media and award shows. But more importantly, our very own Drew Baldwin will be at that panel to discuss the Streamys, the awards show for web content. We’d love to tell you more about another one of our many endeavors.

There are plenty of other events at SMWLA (interested in mobile entertainment? Check this one out.) You should take a look at the schedule to see what tickles your fancy. Even if you’re not going to be around LA at the end of the month, it’s still a great opportunity to learn more about some important names to know in this business.

Reserving your place is as easy as registering and then clicking the ‘ATTEND’ button on the schedule next to all the events you’d like to catch (over 90% of which are 100% free). So what are you waiting for?
