Roblox generated $1.2 billion in the U.S. creator economy between 2017 and 2023

Roblox is not just a sandbox platform for game developers — it has already become a major commercial hub in the United States. The tech company’s inaugural economic and social impact report reveals its sizable contributions to the U.S. GDP between 2017 and 2023. Over that period, Roblox generated $1.2 billion of economic value in the U.S. alone.

The estimate of Roblox’s GDP contribution includes earnings that stemmed from the company’s DevEx program, which allows developers to exchange in-game Robux for real-life currency. That program accounted for the equivalent of 17,840 full-time jobs in the U.S. over the measured six-year period.

“People of all ages and backgrounds create on Roblox,” reads the report. “While some create for the joy of playing with friends, others go on to pursue careers in technology or gaming by monetizing the experiences, 3D models, avatars, outfits, or accessories they create.”

Though Roblox has created value since 2017, its earnings leveled up considerably in 2023. That’s when Roblox paid out $741 million to its community of creators. In 2023 alone, Roblox added $345 million to the U.S. GDP and delivered at least $650 to more than 7,500 of the 5.5 million U.S. creators

who monetize on the platform.

As Roblox makes more inroads in fields like ecommerce, advertising, and software, developer earnings are primed to soar even higher. The new report claims that Roblox’s creator payouts reached $803 million during the year-long period ending on June 30, 2024. That was good for a year-over-year increase of 18%.

Roblox is not only celebrating the size of its payouts but also the unity of its creator community. Though rivals like Epic Games have also shipped hundreds of millions of dollars to creators, Roblox’s new report notes that 44% of its survey respondents said they wouldn’t be developing any other interactive experiences if not for Roblox.

Oh, and Roblox games are still driving huge viewership on YouTube, too. Over the past year, meme channels associated with Roblox favorites like Rainbow Friends have regularly ranked near the top of our Global Top 50 charts.
