Google is updating its search to offer more Perspectives

To make its search results more dynamic, Google is promoting posts from other platforms. At its annual Google I/O conference, the tech giant announced the expansion of “Perspectives,” which will make it easier to access YouTube, TikTok, and Reddit content within relevant search results.

Google will add Perspectives to search pages if it determines that user queries “would benefit from others’ experiences,” according to TechCrunch. In those cases, content that will be pulled into results pages will include question-and-answer threads, forum discussions, social media posts, and videos. And when users search for creators, they’ll find info about those stars’ ages, biographies, and careers.

The expansion of Perspectives is part of Google’s ongoing effort to fend off TikTok, which has become a go-to search engine for many young consumers. Google has acknowledged the challenge TikTok presents and has updated its industry-leading product to bring multiple media into its search results. TikTok has expanded its search businesses by launching new ad formats and encouraging users to write longer video descriptions.

Ironically, Google’s plan to compete with TikTok now includes content from

TikTok. Other Alphabet-owned brands have already experimented with a more perspective-driven approach. On YouTube, personal stories have been promoted in results related to medical issues.

The logic behind that shift is simple. When Google first ascended to search engine dominance more than two decades ago, its ranking algorithm excelled at surfacing content from relevant websites. But as information has moved from web pages to social media platforms, the inadequacies of Google’s results have become apparent — especially for the Gen Z searchers who prefer a creator’s personalized restaurant recommendations over the alternatives.

The wider rollout of Perspectives aims to solve that problem, and Google is taking other steps to ensure its search results are as helpful as possible. As the tech giant continues to experiment with AI technology, it is bringing generative responses to some of its results pages. So if you’re sick of asking ChatGPT what you should have for dinner, now you can see what Google’s in-house AI has to say.
