Epidemic Sound provides background audio for videos. A new web series profiles the artists behind that music.

A new web series is taking viewers Behind the Sound. Specifically, the five-episode show is highlighting some of the artists whose music is available on the “restriction-free” subscription service Epidemic Sound.

Stockholm-based Epidemic offers a library of more than 35,000 songs and 90,000 sound effects. Those tracks are available royalty-free and can be inserted into YouTube, Twitch, Instagram, and Facebook content, as well as films and advertisements. Epidemic subscriptions start at $9 per month.

That’s a lot of music to choose from, but Epidemic’s new web series singles out five artists for special recognition. The first episode features Torii Wolf, a singer-songwriter with an extensive catalog on Epidemic. Wolf and Detroit-based creator Vuhlandes (pictured above) came together for an extensive conversation that touched on creativity, the magic of live performances, and much more.

Wolf also gave shout-outs to the company that brings their music to the masses. “Working with Epidemic Sound has been amazing,” they said. “Epidemic has been like, who are you and how can we amplify that and help the world see you?”

Vuhlandes won’t host all episodes of Behind the Sound. Instead, a rotating cast of creators, including That Icelandic Guy, will check in with the featured artists. Beyond Wolf, the other Epidemic partners profiled in the web series are Alex Kehm

, Lawd Ito, Dajana Lööf, and Ebo Krdum.

Behind the Sound isn’t just a guide for Epidemic subscribers — it’s also a chance to recruit more artists to the service’s catalog. “It is truly humbling to see how our artists work, hear the unique stories of inspiration and be in a front-row seat to watch them grow as musicians,” said Epidemic’s Chief of Music, Niklas Brantberg. “We’re incredibly proud of our music creators and we’re thrilled to showcase just five of their journeys through Behind the Sound.”

18 months after raising a $450 million funding round, Epidemic Sound must respond to a challenge from YouTube. The upcoming Creator Music service will be a robust first-party solution for audio licensing. YouTube is making a play for the royalty-free music biz, and with Behind the Sound, Epidemic is showing that it can be a content company. This isn’t the first program it’s ever released, but it’s a substantial production nonetheless. You can check out Behind the Sound on the Epidemic Sound YouTube channel.
