Liza Koshy Gets Breakup Advice From Stephen Colbert In First-Ever Late Night Appearance

Days before beginning her role as the host of the rebooted version of the Nickelodeon game show Double Dare, Liza Koshy made her first-ever appearance on a late-night TV show. The YouTube star, whose comedy videos and vlogs have brought more than 15 million subscribers to her primary YouTube channel, talked about her breakup and promoted her new TV gig during an episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

Colbert, who introduced Koshy as a creator whose audience outnumbers the population of Canada, asked the YouTube star about her breakup with fellow videomaker David Dobrik. The couple announced their split in a tearful video posted on June 5, but Koshy reiterated that she and Dobrik remain close. As evidence of their ongoing unity, she cited the six-month period during which they had already broken up but hadn’t yet informed their fans.

“We wanted to give ourselves some time to really come to an understanding and be able to be

best friends and be in each other’s lives still, without being in a romantic relationship but still being able to create online,” she said. This plan didn’t sit well with Colbert. “Terrible idea,” he quipped.

The main point of Koshy’s Colbert chat, however, concerned her upcoming appearance on Double Dare. She joked that she should have Dobrik on the show just to slime him, and evaluated nostalgic Nickelodeon characters based on their potential Double Dare skill. The original iteration of the game show aired between 1986 and 1993, during Nickelodeon’s heyday as a producer of children’s television.

Koshy is not the first YouTube star to show up on Colbert’s CBS show. His previous guests have included gamer Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg (in 2015), “shitty robots” queen Simone Giertz (in 2016), and Hot Ones host Sean Evans (in 2017).
