Musical.ly Reportedly Talking With Top Media Companies About Original Content

Almost three years after its launch, Musical.ly stands as a popular content platform, particularly among young viewers. Now, the mobile streaming app wants to connect those viewers to the media companies eager to reach them. According to Bloomberg, Musical.ly has talked with major conglomerates like Viacom and NBCUniversal about original content that would premiere on the app over the summer.

Bloomberg’s sources said the upcoming shows will be “participatory and interactive, instead of feeling heavily produced,” and they will go beyond the music category through which Musical.ly built its audience, but few details about specific programs are known at this time. MTV, a Viacom-owned company, has made known its intent to revive its cult classic My Super Sweet 16 through Musical.ly, though a release date has not yet been set.

Viacom and NBCUniversal are likely interested in grabbing a piece the Musical.ly pie, given the app’s success of late. Creators have made significant money on the app (and on its sister app, Livel.ly), and some of them have gone on to receive mainstream recognition. Meanwhile, up-and-comers are using Musical.ly to churn out some inventive work, such as this music video that has been making the rounds on the internet over the last few days:
