Apple Music Unveils Trailer For Reality Competition Series ‘Planet Of The Apps’

Over the weekend, subscription service Apple Music unveiled the trailer

for its first original series, Carpool Karaoke, a full-length format inspired by the beloved Late Late Show segment originated by James Corden. And now, Apple has released the trailer for its second original series, Planet Of The Apps — a reality competition to find the next big mobile app.

Part Shark Tank, part The Voice, Planet Of The Apps is hosted by renowned DJ Zane Lowe and features entrepreneurs pitching their app ideas to celebrity judges Jessica Alba, Gwyneth Paltrow, Gary Vaynerchuk, and will.i.am. If their ideas are selected, they receive mentoring by the celebrity judge of their choosing, and, ultimately, the opportunity to receive venture funding and featured placement within Apple’s App Store.

While a precise release date has yet to be announced, Apple says the series is coming to Apple Music — which is priced at $10 per month, and currently counts 20 million paying subscribers — this spring, with new episodes to arrive weekly. Check out the trailer right here:

In an interview at Recode’s Code Media conference yesterday, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet software and services, Eddy Cue, explained that the company’s foray into original content doesn’t mean it has ambitions to become a full-fledged media business à la Netflix. Rather, these endeavors serve a promotional role to draw in and keep users engaged in Apple’s other services — including iTunes, the App Store, and Apple Music.

In addition to Carpool Karaoke: The Series and Planet Of The Apps, Apple also has a Dr. Dre-starring scripted drama entitled Vital Signs and a documentary about Drake’s music label, Cash Money Records, in the works.
