Amazon Launches $5 Monthly Anime Subscription Service ‘Strike’

Amazon is broadening its streaming horizons with the launch of Anime Strike, a channel wholly dedicated to Japanese animation. Strike is the latest addition to the Amazon Channels initiative, Variety reports, an add-on subscription service launched in 2015 for Prime members, who can subscribe to programming from the likes of HBO, Seeso, Machinima, PBS Kids, and roughly 100 others.

Strike, priced at $4.99 per month, will feature 1,000 ad-free series episodes and movies, including The Great Passage, Scum’s Wish, Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga, Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers, and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Strikers. Several series will air on Strike exclusively in the U.S., and new content will be added weekly, per Variety

.

“With anime in particular, there’s a strong, passionate audience that is underserved by traditional pay TV,” said Amazon’s VP of digital video and head of Amazon Channels worldwide, Michael Paull. Strike is Amazon’s first self-branded channel, but Paull noted that the company plans to launch its own channels in other genres in the months ahead.
