Amazon is broadening its streaming horizons with the launch of Anime Strike, a channel wholly dedicated to Japanese animation. Strike is the latest addition to the Amazon Channels initiative, Variety reports, an add-on subscription service launched in 2015 for Prime members, who can subscribe to programming from the likes of HBO, Seeso, Machinima, PBS Kids, and roughly 100 others.
Strike, priced at $4.99 per month, will feature 1,000 ad-free series episodes and movies, including The Great Passage, Scum’s Wish, Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga, Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers, and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Strikers. Several series will air on Strike exclusively in the U.S., and new content will be added weekly, per Variety
.“With anime in particular, there’s a strong, passionate audience that is underserved by traditional pay TV,” said Amazon’s VP of digital video and head of Amazon Channels worldwide, Michael Paull. Strike is Amazon’s first self-branded channel, but Paull noted that the company plans to launch its own channels in other genres in the months ahead.
Current competitors in the anime streaming space include Ellation-owned Crunchyroll as well as Funimation and Daisuki.
