At last night’s Academy Awards, French sci-fi short Mr. Hublot took home the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. Immediately after its victory, the film became available on YouTube (perhaps ripped and uploaded illegally from its original website), where it can be streamed in full.
Mr. Hublot runs for 11 minutes and focuses on an adorable goggled man who lives in a futuristic city. To win its Academy Award, it beat out another film–Room On The Broom–that had also previously posted clips to YouTube. One of last year’s Animated Short Film nominees, Fresh Guacamole, has received more than 3.7 million YouTube views to date.
If rumors are to be believed, Mr. Hublot will not be the only one of this year’s short film winners to find its way to the Internet. Several outlets have reported that Netflix has purchased The Lady In Number 6, which won an Academy Award in the Documentary
Short Film category. The film, which chronicled Holocaust survivor Alice Herz-Somer, gained a lot of press when Herz-Somer died a week before the Oscars. Her story will reportedly arrive on Netflix on April 1st.“Telling Alice’s story was a life-changing experience for everyone involved with the film,” said Nicholas Reed, the producer of The Lady In Number 6. “We are so glad to partner with Netflix so that their viewers will be able to enjoy Alice’s infectious love of life and bright spirit. Netflix viewers and future generations will be able to learn so many life lessons from this most amazing woman.”
By picking up The Lady In Number 6, Netflix will get its hands on its first Oscar winner; the first documentary film it distributed, The Square, was also nominated this year, though it failed to win. It’s a new version of an old adage: If you can’t beat ’em, buy ’em.
