The second season of House of Cards will arrive on Valentine’s Day, but Netflix isn’t waiting to make a decision about the show’s future. As first reported by Deadline, the groundbreaking political thriller has been picked up for a third season.
Though the new deal gives the green light to season three, this is the first time House of Cards has been renewed; the first two seasons were both guaranteed when Netflix picked up House of Cards for a reported $100 million back in March 2011. The decision to renew the
series before the debut of new season is not a new one for Netflix; the platform also picked up a second season of Orange Is The New Black before the critically-acclaimed dramedy’s debut last August.House of Cards is the second Netflix series to pick up a third season, with Lilyhammer doing the same last month. Almost all of Netflix’s original series, however, have been renewed for at least a second season. Once those renewals join a few hyped-up new series set to debut over the next couple of years, Netflix will sport a formidable lineup capable of challenging some of its cable rivals.
House of Cards figures to be at the center of those plans. The season two trailer is available on YouTube in gorgeous 4K quality, and it makes a good case that season two will live up to the high expectations set by the show’s stellar debut. There’s no chance Netflix will regret its decision to offer a third season.
