Google Demands The Windows Phone YouTube App Go Back Off The Market

Last week, we reported that Google‘s YouTube mobile app was back in the Windows Phone store after a three month absence. While it returned with a number of new features, the only one that mattered to Google (who ordered Microsoft to make the new version) was increased support for pre-roll ads. Clearly, the new YouTube app hasn’t been much of an improvement in that category, because after just two days on the market, it has been recalled once again.

Google is clearly interested in a greater proliferation of mobile ads because of the profit spike it saw when they became available on Iphones last year. “Microsoft has not made the browser upgrades necessary to enable a fully-featured YouTube experience, and has instead re-released a YouTube app that violates our Terms of Service,” a spokesperson told The Verge.

Microsoft is obviously sick of getting pushed around by its fellow tech giant. According to a blog post by Microsoft VP David Howard

, the new app only fails to meet Google’s demand that it be built on HTML5, a different coding language from the one used on iOS and Android. “It seems to us that Google’s reasons for blocking our app are manufactured so that we can’t give our users the same experience Android and iPhone users are getting,” claimed Howard. “The roadblocks Google has set up are impossible to overcome, and they know it.”

These two companies have feuded over this issue in the past, and things have to be reaching a breaking point. How many more perceived slights these two companies take before the collectively decide that having an official Windows Phone app for the world leader in online video sharing is simply not worth it?
