One of YouTube’s most likable and vibrant young personalities has passed. Talia Castellano, who posted videos under the username Taliajoy18, succumbed on Tuesday to a six year battle with cancer.
Castellano was diagnosed with neuroblastoma when she was seven, but the spirited fashion enthusiast did not give up. Instead, she gained widespread attention after an appearance on Ellen. After becoming an honorary CoverGirl, her YouTube makeup tutorials gained a significant audience of more than 750,000 subscribers. Her unique style continued to shine through, even as her cancer continued to ravage her body.
In March, Castellano stoically told her fans that her cancer had been declared terminal by doctors. In her final update, posted four weeks ago, she talked about constantly moving into and out of the hospital, her smile never fading.
Castellano’s mother announced the news of her daughter’s death via Talia’s Twitter feed, and several prominent YouTubers, including Michael Buckley, iJustine, John Green, and The Fine Bros, have offered their condolences.
Castellano was a spokesperson for the Base Camp Children’s Cancer Foundation, which recently completed an Indiegogo campaign with the help of her celebrity. Those wishing to honor Castellano’s legacy should make a donation to Base Camp in her name.
The precocious teen’s death is a sobering reminder of the extremely damaging effects cancer can have on both individuals and communities. We at Tubefilter would like to extend our condolences to Talia’s family as well as her many, many fans. Her upbeat attitude never faded, and she was beautiful both inside and out.
