Latest Netflix Series Out To Prove ‘Orange Is The New Black’

Arrested Development has come and gone, which means it’s time for Netflix to move on to its next high-profile series. The next entry in the premium video platform’s originals catalog is Orange Is The New Black, a dramedy set in a women’s prison.

Orange Is The New Black is based off of a personal memoir by Piper Kerman about the time she spent in jail. The series follows Kerman’s (Taylor Schilling) attempt to navigate the slammer after getting caught up in a drug ring. The creator of the show is Jenji Kohan, who turned a similar concept (i.e. white-collar woman lives the life of a petty criminal) in TV gold with Emmy-winning series Weeds. Kohan’s presence continues Netflix’s trend of serving as a distribution platform for high-profile creators; in fact, all of the site’s original series come from known names.

Other notables in the cast include American Pie‘s Jason Biggs and That 70s Show‘s Laura Prepon. Though the series (which, in line with Netflix offerings, will be release all 13 of its episodes at once) won’t debut until July 11th, all of the major characters can be seen in the recently-released trailer.

Netflix’s original series have thus far been a mixed bag. House of Cards was an undeniable hit, Hemlock Grove was a flop, and Arrested Development, thus far, has been somewhere in between. It’s hard to tell from the trailer where Orange Is The New Black will end up, but Kohan seems to be right in her wheelhouse.
