First there was Fred, then there was Annoying Orange, and now there may be Smosh. According to Variety, Alloy Digital is talks to cut a TV deal for the top YouTube channel.
Per the Variety article, Alloy “is in talks with multiple cable networks about finding a second home for the talent across Smosh’s five channels.” TV content from Smosh could be scripted, like the currently successful Annoying Orange Cartoon Network program, or unscripted, which could end up closer to the upcoming script based on Ray William Johnson’s life.
TV is a logical next step for Smosh
, who are pushing the limits of the YouTube audience with their now 10 million-strong subscriber base. The reported TV talks aren’t the attempts Smosh has made to expand beyond the Internet. Late last year, rumors arose that Smosh’s oeuvre could find its way to a nationwide selection of movie theaters. As with the recent news regarding Philip DeFranco’s deal with Revision3, Smosh’s TV efforts seem like an attempt to establish revenue streams outside of YouTube.
