Christmas is a time for pure, clean entertainment and Christian family values. The average YouTube comments section, however, is filled with hate, nastiness, and name-calling. App developers Nation are hoping to reconcile these two statements in happy harmony. The English studio has released YuleTube, a browser extension that censors comments by replacing swear words with light-hearted Christmas terms.
A recent video from Nation’s Vimeo channel explains the functionality of the extension by applying it to an unfortunately-fictional video called “Reindeer$$ – Make It Snowz (Uncensored)”.
As much as clean-cut, religious folk would like to believe the app is an attempt at reaching the moral high ground, YuleTube is comical in nature. The app turns inflammatory comments into statements such as “Rudolph is one gift-giving pimp” and “Don’t go full jolly old St. Nick
on me.”The app is Nation’s second holiday-themed app in as many years. Last year, they unveiled the Christmas Cracker, a mobile app through which two warring thumbs can break a cracker, with the person who receives the larger share coming out on top.
I would like to have a nice, relaxing Christmas, free of affronts to my sexuality and unwarranted comparisons to Hitler. Therefore, I am excited to give YuleTube a try and turn my YouTube coal into some holiday magic.
