'Palisades Pool Party', One Sexy Fun Awkward Conundrum

Palisades Pool PartyPalisades Pool Party is a conundrum in the best sense of the word, at once pathos, hysterical, terrible and oddly wonderful, it’s not quite Glee, nor Gossip Girl, but somewhere awkwardly sandwiched between. A show about the twenty four hours surrounding a teen pool party, there is something compelling about it, like a well-orchestrated trainwreck.

We are either in the deftest of hands with creators Tai Fauci and Jack Monroe, or they are getting very very lucky with a bad show. The unevenness of tone leads me to believe it’s a collision of the two. Just take Mischa, played by Danny Zaccagnino, as he gazes morose into the bathroom mirror, shirtless, fingering his hair while some very depressing ‘I might want to kill myself’ music plays in the background in episode one (song is, Overreacting by Brad Sucks – real name – and isn’t a bad tune in and of itself). The moment is slightly over-the-top, slightly erotic and slightly cloying, but I kind of really want to know what he’s about to do, which I’m guessing is either cry or masturbate. And then (spoiler alert) when he pulls out the needle…I’m still wondering if crying and masturbating are on the table perhaps after he shoots up. It’s funny and sad and confusing and totally on the nose, but somehow, someway, entertaining.

PalisadesSince there isn’t much to go on so far in the teaser and first two episodes for Zaccagnino, I’ll reserve judgment on his acting. That said, the rest of the acting I must admit seemed either adequate or really bad when the show first began. But then as it went on, my initial least favorite, Whitmer Thomas, playing emo-boy next door neighbor, Josh, became my favorite one by the second episode. His angst ridden, mildly effeminate performance had me laughing at the end of episode two, but also caring about whether or not he was going to get the girl of his dreams, popular pool party thrower, next door neighbor Cassidy played by Ashley Schneider.

You see, Josh and Cassidy had sex the night before and now he’s hurt because she didn’t put her super-hot college ex-boyfriend on her ‘Blacklist’ of people that can’t come to her party. Yes, Josh is really that emo. His tantrum in episode one is capped off in ep 2 when Cassidy’s BFF Bianca, played by Katie Seeley (I Kissed a Vampire) forces a kiss on him in front of Cassidy. Oh, the drama. It gets even juicier when Cassidy and Bianca have a hot catfight in Cassidy’s bedroom, ending it amicably as though this is par for the course with this relationship. Which actually makes their friendship complex – in a good way.

As for the lead of the show, Schneider is goodlooking, tough enough and likeable enough to keep you coming back and her supporting cast from Thomas to Seeley to Zaccagnino (among others) are varied and sharp enough as actors and characters that I think the show will have some legs. The writing is relatively simplistic, with some odd, though sometimes intriguing character turns. Though things like the ‘Blacklist’ and Josh’s reaction to it are a little cheesy. Again, this could be by design, or happy accident, as it lends to the funny of the show.

Production value is stellar, I must say. Laura Beth Love does some stellar DP’ing – the thing is beautifully shot. Monroe’s direction isn’t bad either, keeping the look consistent throughout as well as balancing the odd amalgamation of tones. The other thing that needs mentioning is the music, which is good throughout, though perhaps overused, and overcooked a bit.

In the grand tradition of teen/tween TV entertainment these days, there’s a real effort to showcase some teenybop indy music that at times feels either written for the show, or perhaps vice versa (the show written for the music). This works with the show and against it – or does it? Here, again, we run into a bit of a conundrum because the music is sometimes so spot on so as to almost be narrating what we are seeing that I found myself laughing out loud at the silliness of it.

Normally I’d chalk this up as bad decision-making, but it’s so ridiculous in some ways that I can’t help but think that it must be somewhat intentional. Just look at ep 2 (below) as Bianca strolls outside in a black dress, ready for mischief, and the music croons, “There she comes all dressed in black…” and I’m thinking this is way too on the nose, and then find myself thoroughly entertained by the thought of the on-the-noseness of it. Go figure.

The website, www.palisadespoolparty.com, again has good production value. And again, with the tag, ‘Sex. Jealousy. Revenge. Love. Awkward.’, running along the top of the page, you gotta believe they see the humor in this. Obviously, smartly targeting their social network-wild demo they have a presence on KoldCast TV (it’s main distribution partner), Facebook, MySpace and Twitter with a decidedly “teen” vibe that feels a little forced, but in an almost (almost) comical way – making way too much use of the term, ‘awkward’.

Which I guess is apropos of my conclusion, which is an awkward adulation of this enigmatic series that falls somewhere in the realm of the comedic teen melodrama. Oh and the other crazy thing is, especially for me, if you know my reviews, both eps are at least ten minutes long and I wasn’t once bored, so they must be doing something right. So, take a look at this oddly compelling, oddly toned oddity and please tell me why I like it, because I can’t figure it out.

(Ed. Note: While Palisades Pool Party is featured with a display ad on this site as part of the Tubefilter Spotlight program for indie web series, it in no way influenced our reviewer in his review.)

'Woke Up Dead' Comes Out Blazing, 1.4M Streams in 10 Days

Woke Up Dead - CrackleSony announced today that it’s fall tentpole web series, Woke Up Dead, is off to a formidable start racking up 1.4 million streams in just 10 days since its premiere on October 5. 1.4 million for an original web series isn’t shabby no matter how you slice it. This show clearly has two big factors pushing it along: Zombies and a recognizable, talent-rich cast.

For those that haven’t yet checked it out, it’s not too late to bang through the first dozen episodes which clock in at a little over four minutes a piece. Jon Heder stars as recent USC grad Drex Greene who lives with his Zi8-sporting video obsessed roomie Matt (Josh Gad) and one day wakes up to find out he’s dead. Drex naturally is a little confused and tries to reclaim some form of normalcy. That means taking a droll office job a InfoCorps, where his snooty co-worker Andrew (Wayne Knight). Yes, there’s a love interest, Cassi (Krysten Ritter), a young med student who tries to help figure out what his brain-eating zombie condition is all about.

So far twelve episodes of the Kodak-sponsored series have been released, counting today’s new one. Assuming that the first one was the top performer, as is usually the case with new web series, we’ll estimate it at around 300,000 views. That leaves about 100,000 as an average per episode for the following 11.

Episode releases (so far):

  • Episode 1: Up and At ‘Em (Oct. 5) – shown above
  • Episode 2: The Waking Dead (Oct. 5)
  • Episode 3: Dead TV (Oct. 5)
  • Episode 4: The Working Dead (Oct. 5)
  • Episode 5: Work It All Out (Oct. 6)
  • Episode 6: The Searching Dead (Oct. 7)
  • Episode 7: Lost & Found (Oct. 8)
  • Episode 8: Dead Man Typing (Oct. 9)
  • Episode 9: Someone Wicked This Way Comes (Oct. 12)
  • Episode 10: Pill of the Dead (Oct. 13)
  • Episode 11: Feeling Groovy (Oct. 14)
  • Episode 12: IM of the Dead (Oct. 15)
  • Episode 13: Hide and Seek (Oct. 16)
  • Episode 14: Warehouse of the Living Dead (Oct. 20)

Their biggest previous hit to date was Angel of Death, which notched just over 5 million views before it was pulled down to drive sales of the DVD. Coming in second, Star-ving, the David Fasutino faux-reality series racked up a decent 3 million total streams on site.

For more about the series, including an interview with Executive Producer Stan Rogow of Electric Farm Entertainment, check out our Woke Up Dead launch feature. Electric Farm’s other recently launched web series, Valemont, is off to a strong start as well on MTV according to EFE’s Brent Friedman.

Blog Action Day: 'Big Ideas' from GOOD and Babelgum

Big Ideas - blog action dayToday is officially Blog Action Day 2009, and in support of this year’s theme, Climate Change, we thought we would take a closer look at GOOD Magazine’s Big Ideas web series made for Babelgum. The series is imaginative, if not a bit farcical in the fun ideas its guests cook up. But the concept of blank page thinking about our environment is important. Anything is on the table if we’re going to make an impact in healing our climate.

Big Ideas reminds us a a bit of GOOD’s Inventions series that we profiled in our look at GOOD’s move into more original web series. Both series are mental playgrounds of sorts, with a mix of guests like Imogen Heap, The Sklar Brothers and Dickson Despommier (above). The six-part Big Ideas series was made for Babelgum’s “Our Earth” channel as part of a contest where viewers submit their big ideas. The winner will be announced later this month and have their video featured on the site.

To find out more about Blog Action Day and the other site participating in this worldwide (over 150 countries!) event, head to blogactionday.org and follow @blogactionday on Twitter (or hashtag #BAD09). It’s pretty mindblowing how many different perspectives and ideas can be when all brought together in one day. There’s also a live stream that’s worth a peek of posts as they happen, like The Official Google Blog’s green tour of the Google campus.

UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown even got in the game with a Blog Action Day post on his blog writing that “climate change is the biggest threat to all our futures.”

'Circle of Ei8ht' Trailer Freaks Us Out on MySpace

Circle of Ei8htParamount Digital’s Circle of Ei8ht just released a trailer on MySpace, setting up for the online premiere of the series on October 27. We took an in-depth look at the myriad of moving pieces that brought this project together in our Anatomy of a Deal feature on Circle of Ei8ht back in August.

The supernatural series stars stars Austin Highsmith as Jessica, a newcomer to the City of Angels, who just moved into a loft on the eighth floor of a spooky downtown building called The Dante. It sounds something like a haunted Melrose Place, with her neighbors all being twenty-something good looking bohemians. Naturally, there are some gruesome deaths going down in this place and for some reason Jessica takes it upon herself, and her beefy neighbor Evan (Ryan Doom) to solve them. Joining her on the cast are Road Trip’s skinny man DJ Quall, Katie Lowes, Natashia Williams, Josh Kelly and John Bishop.

The show’s site on MySpace is custom built, and promises several levels of interaction with the story—hidden clues, mobile content, an online game and, most interestingly, a whole subplot where the audience directly controls the fate of the characters. “Find the clues, unlock the mystery and choose wisely… or people will die,” says the show’s tag line.

This is one of the first new web series made for MySpace in a while, following a management shuffle at the company that slowed down movement on that end. Sure, we lambasted MySpace last month for their reporting of auto-plays of BFF as views, but this one isn’t just a glorified ad campaign. It’s a full-on entertainment property, with no less than five companies actively involved in its creation, including lead sponsor Mountain Dew who was involved creatively from the beginning of the project.

The first four episodes of Circle of Ei8ht debut October 27 exclusively on MySpace, with weekly episode releases after that through December 8.

Fantasy Football LIVE, The @aplusk One, 6:30 PM Tonight

Fantasy Football Live- Ashton KutcherA couple weeks back we asked the rather obvious question, Where are all the fantasy football web series? We had found a few, some scripted, some not. It was right around then that we came across a fantasy football goldmine, Fantasy Football LIVE, a weekly, hour-and-a-half live web show all about NFL for us armchair GMs.

It’s  the latest of Asthon Kutcher’s web originals, and somehow has me way more hooked than KataylstHQ or the on-hiatus Blah Girls. In full disclosure, I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m a fantasy football nut and this show is right up my alley. But even if debating the likelihood of LT’s return to glory or the durability of  Willie Parker’s turf toe isn’t your thing, you still have to appreciate the fact that this live show pulls in an average of 10,000 simultaneous viewers in its first few weeks.

Now, it doesn’t hurt that @aplusk himself is on the show, and he tweets out weekly about the series to his 3.6 million followers. The series airs live on UStream and Facebook, under Kutcher’s channel and the live chatrooms and Twitter are a key part of the fan interaction. So if you’re trying to figure out why Willis Magahee is worth a start after he laid down a 0-pt stinker last week, you can tweet like this fan to @aplusk to (possibly) have it answered by the hosts. Speaking of hosts, Kutcher isn’t just there for vanity. He knows a thing or two about fantasy, holding his own with his resident FFB expert Nate Zegura.

There is the little issue of the name of the show, since Yahoo also calls their fantasy football web series Fantasy Football Live. Googling for the show comes up with the Yahoo Sports version, which is shot to tape. There are also about a dozen other series that offer tips and pseudo-expert commentary out there. But with LIVE web series being the theme of the week on Tubefilter, there’s no question this is our favorite…for now.

Meetup Countdown: 'Coin-Op TV Live' Pwns The Live Stream

Coin-Op TV Live

Days until Oct. Tubefilter Web TV Meetup: 5

Number of episodes of Coin-Op TV: 105

Regular readers will remember back in July when we spelled out 4 Ways to Make the Most of the Tubefilter Web TV Meetup. It’s worth dusting off and reading again if you’re even thinking about attending. (And if you’re in LA next week, you better have a good excuse if we don’t see you there.) Number 1 on that list was “Do Your Homework!” and that means finding out more about our stellar panelists. Today we’re taking a closer look at Coin-Op TV Live, who’s co-host Hailey Bright will be on the Going LIVE! panel. (RSVP here)

Coin-Op TV Live

The hour-long live video gamer series, hosted and created by Robert Welkner dates all the way back to 2004 when it launched as a video podcast. In fall of 2006 the series became one of the first shows on the all-live web TV network, TheStream.tv which gave it a new home and larger set.

Coin-Op TV LiveLike most live shows on TheStream.tv, including Streamy-nominated Monkey News Source, the hosts interview guests and make heavy use of the live chatroom audience that accompanies the live stream. For Coin-Op TV, it’s all about interviewing top game creators, luminaries, designers and yes, even some hardcore gamers like Project Lore host Alex Albrecht, The Guild’s Sandeep Parikh and Legend of Neil star Tony Janning. Not all of their guests can make it to their LA-based studio, so Welkner and Bright are known to setup live video interviews across the world via Skype, working in real-time trivia with viewers using Twitter and the chatrooms.

Now 105 episodes in, the Coin-Op crew which includes TheStream.tv founder Brian Gramo (who is also on the Meetup panel), have live streaming down to a science. During Monday’s Going LIVE! panel, we’ll dig into the specifics of what it takes to pull of a multi-camera live stream. If you have questions for the Coin-Op TV team, fire them over to us @tubefilter on Twitter.

The twosome of Welkner and Bright, who play off each other deftly, are often spotted outside of the studio too, hitting up events like Comic-Con, Blizzcon and Penny Arcade Expo (PAX). Bright even was tapped this winter as IGN’s Babe of the Day.  Last week as Hailey hit the two-year anniversary mark on the show, some of her fans decided to show how much they adore her with a little video:

US Army Rangers 'Pushing the Limits', Missing 3 Episodes?

Pushing the Limits - US ArmyUS Army recruiting ads have been hit or miss for years, trying to sell the adventure and badass side of Army life while leaving out the shifty politics and grim warzones. We’re usually shown brief vignettes of the poster boys and girls, carefully weeded up the ladder through Army PR and their ad agency. So it’s somewhat refreshing to seen a longer-form dive into web series out of the Army with its 12-episode Pushing the Limits series.

The series is broken out into 4-minute episodes covering the grueling three-day Best Ranger Competition at Fort Benning in Georgia. “It’s the best of the best,” said Ranger Training Brigade’s Col. Douglas Flohr in the opening episode (above). “This really is our Super Bowl.” Apparently less than half the field of Rangers, that’s those who already are Rangers, don’t finish the epic 59-hour competition. With 49 teams in the hunt, there’s only 1 winner. Interesting, you could say that this piqued our reality-series interests.

The only real hangup here is the question of what happened to the final three episodes? Currently nine of the twelve eps have been released, one what appeared to be a weekly schedule with three new ones a week. But the rollout seems to have stopped on August 31st, leaving us wondering where the final three are. Episode 10, “The Helocast,” which looks sufficiently awesome, had a preview at the end of Ep 9 (below), but we can find it anywhere. (We have a call in to the Army that we haven’t yet heard back on.) Is the winning team classified?

'Mercury Men', Early Streamys Art Direction Favorite?

Mercury Men - production designThe 2nd Annual Streamy Awards are April 11, 2010. That’s 180 days until the winners are announced live on stage, and we thought it’s never too early to start handicapping the field. So it’s nice to see that The Mercury Men posted a behind the scenes look at the pulp sci-fi web series’ production design.

Mercury Men creator Christopher Preksta released the documentary video (above) as part of his “Mercury Mondays” weekly production journals. “Design is really important to me,” said Preksta in the video, “It’s another tool that I as a filmmaker have to support my story and set the tone, the world and bring a unique vision to the story.”

In the video we learn that Mercury Men design pulls from three separate themes—the 30’s/40’s sci-fi pulp (Buck Rodgers, Flash Gordon), 1950’s sci-fi movie’s noir, and the early 60’s US Space program. Costumer Ricky Lyle, who also worked on Preksta’s Streamy-nominated Captain Blasto, gets credit from Preksta for nailing that uber-researched style that he was looking for.

“The phrase that I used a lot in our design was that we were working an analog world. This isn’t the digital world of today. “Our story takes place in an older time when their technology was more archaic,” he added while showing off an antique walkie prop with a 6-foot anteana.

Mercury Men - still 2“A lot of time in the indie film world, they neglect design, because a lot people think that you need a lot of money for good production design,” said Preksta. “That’s just not the case, you don’t need a lot of money for elaborate sets or expensive looking costumes.” “Half the stuff we got was cheap off eBay or at flea markets,” he added.

There’s something to be said about creating presentation materials, or in this case a video, that profiles elements of the production. Last year’s Streamy winner for Art Direction, Kim Bailey for Tiki Bar TV, put together an impressive “for your consideration” page on his site that detailed the before-during-after of his impressive SS Tiki set. No doubt that Academy voters had it fresh on their minds when casting votes last winter.

The trailer for Mercury Men was released in August, and the series is still working out a distribution plan, hoping to release later this year. That of course is one thing that would have to happen to make it eligible for a Streamy come April.

James Gunn's 'Humanzee!' Premieres on Blip, Too Racy for XBox Live

James Gunn's HumanzeeJames Gunn seems to be digging the web series world these days. The Scooby-Doo screenwriter is following up on his successful porn flick satire series PG Porn, with the release today of an even racier series, Humanzee! The offbeat scripted comedy was shot back in 2008 and was planned to head to XBox Live, until someone over at Microsoft pulled the plug due to content concerns. Did they really not know what they signed up for when tapping Gunn?

First off, we have to throw out the NSFW warning on the first episode (above), mostly for f-bombs, not nudity. The show itself feels like a live action cartoon sitcom, complete with a laugh track pushing us through the quick setups and reversals. Gunn’s description of what it’s about is just too good to paraphrase:

HUMANZEE! is the story of myself and my human-chimp hybrid son, appropriately named “Humanzee” (played by my brother, Sean Gunn). In the show, Humanzee is created when I send my sperm in a turkey baster on ice to a secret laboratory in Bratislava, they impregnate a female chimp with it, and they send me back my own Humanzee son! —James Gunn

Mikaela Hoover - HumanzeeBesides casting himself (as himself), Gunn brought on his brother Sean along with Sorority Forever star Mikaela Hoover, who is just plain stunning (see right), Valentine Miele and Michael Rooker. There’s also actual porn star Jenna Haze, who’s credits you’ll have to Google for yourselves.

“Out of all of the stuff I’ve produced for the web, mobile, and gaming platforms – PG Porn, Sparky & Mikaela, and more, HUMANZEE! is by far my favorite… and by far the most outrageous,” said Gunn in a recent blog post on his site.

The series is being released through Blip.tv starting today, who wasn’t afraid of the raunchy subject matter. “The show that was too hot for XBOX Live AND too hot for Spike.com has finally found a home,” wrote Gunn. “Yes, the one place with balls these days is Blip.tv.”

'I Kissed A Vampire': Even Campier Than 'High School Musical'?

I Kissed a Vampire - web series

What do you get when you take High School Musical‘s Lucas Grabeel and One Tree Hill’s Drew Seely, give them some fangs, and tell them to sing and dance? You get an online musical, I Kissed a Vampire,  that would have Joss Whedon rolling in his grave (and that’s not even possble!)…and you might smash your computer in the process.

For instance, you might have the type of frustration I did just trying to watch the episodes. Only available on iTunes, you first have to be willing to pony up the $1.99 an episode, then you need to make sure that your iTunes is running at it’s most current version, and finally, you have to have the latest version of Safari running to order from the online store. Oh and of course, the latest version of Safari only runs on Mac versions 4.0.3 for Tiger or higher, so make sure that is taken care of as well.

Granted, being a Mac user, I don’t know if PC users will have such a hard time and I personally have an odd fear of updating software because of a kernel error that destroyed my world that I got when trying to do a simple software update about 6 months ago. But I’m fairly computer savvy plus I love vampires AND musicals so you can imagine my excitement at a vampire musical! Long story short: if the hoops I had to jump through were coming to a point where even I was tempted to give up and not watch, that is saying something.

That’s not to say that I don’t think I Kissed a Vampire isn’t going to do well in a particular market. The pull of a High School Musical connection alone will guarantee a fair amount of downloads. Not to mention the Twilight quotient, although the campiness of the material is almost on the verge of making fun of the popular series (for an example of parody done right, check out Take180’s I <3 Vampires. And having grown up performing in musicals, I can admire the amount of time and energy that went into the production. I just don’t know if it was worth the several hour struggle with my software updater. Though you know, kids know a lot more about technology these days. I feel so old all of a sudden…

Now, if you are in New York, you can avoid the computer issue all together and check out the premiere live at Landmark Sunshine Theatre tonight at 6 PM EST. Grabeel and Seely will be in attendance with co-star Adrian Slade. Tickets are given out on a first-come, first-serve basis so get there early if you do plan on going.
