The owner of the second-most followed account on TikTok is making her debut on the Great White Way. Charli D’Amelio has landed a part in the Broadway musical & Juliet, which arrived in New York City in 2022.
D’Amelio will portray the character of Chariman in a role Playbill describes as “dance-heavy.” The competitive dancer-turned-TikTok star will begin her “limited engagement” at the Sondheim Theatre on October 29. Her maiden Broadway run will last until January 19, 2025.
“I’m beyond excited to join the Broadway community—it’s a dream I’ve had since I was a little girl,” D’Amelio said in a statement. “To be able to make my Broadway debut—especially in the cast of & Juliet, is truly a dream come true, and I can’t wait to share this experience with everyone.”
D’Amelio’s dancing chops keyed her TikTok breakout, allowing her to become the most-followed creator on the platform. (Khaby Lame has since overtaken her in that ranking.) She continued to draw on her artistic background when she joined the season 31 cast of Dancing With The Stars (alongside her mom) and ultimately emerged as the winner of the competition.
As projects like The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical bring the social media and musical theater worlds closer together, there are more opportunities for stars like D’Amelio to land high-profile roles. That being said, the phenomenon of creators on Broadway predates TikTok. A decade ago, YouTube star Chester See displayed his considerable vocal abilities with a turn in the musical Rock of Ages.
D’Amelio won’t be the first or the last creator to score a Broadway gig, but her ascent to the pinnacle of the musical theater world has already drawn a range of reactions. But the move is a natural fit for a dancer of D’Amelio’s caliber, and it may be a more savvy career move than some of her other recent ventures. Creators like ZoeUnlimited have argued that D’Amelio stretched herself too thin by dabbling in everything from footwear to investing. Now, she’s getting back to her bread-and-butter.
& Juliet is a speculative story that imagines how Shakespeare’s tragic heroine would have lived had she survived the end of Romeo & Juliet. It was nominated for nine Tony Awards in 2023, including Best Musical.
