Theorist Entertainment is putting a novel spin on one of the YouTube community’s favorite genres. In collaboration with parent company Lunar X, the brand founded by thoughtful creator Matthew Patrick (a.k.a. MatPat) is launching LoreFi, a channel that will add narrative elements to a study beats playlist that resembles the ones offered by Lofi Girl.
In MatPat’s own words, LoreFi is “Lofi Girl meets a murder mystery.” Theorist fans will be able to listen to chill music while simultaneously uncovering details about the on-screen characters and settings. The first LoreFi episode, which debuts on YouTube on July 13, is set in the early 2000s. It follows a girl named Taylor, who discovered that the lofi music she downloaded hides some secrets.
The popularity of the original “beats to relax/study to” stream has presented the Lofi Girlwith numerous growth opportunities, ranging from new radio stations to collabs to a scholarship fund. Several imitators have already popped up, and the expansion of the lofi genre gave MatPat a chance to pursue a passion project.
Though the OG Lofi Girl has some lore of her own, the Theorist twist on the idea will include a full-fledged backstory replete with mysteries for fans to solve. That level of detail will not look out of place for Theorist fans, who turn to MatPat’s brand for in-depth analysis of pop culture touchstones.
The original face of Theorist has taken a step back from his on-screen role since he and his wife Stephanie sold their business to Lunar X in 2022. But MatPat still serves as the President of Theorist, and he used his recent appearance at VidCon to shine some light on LoreFi. Naturally, a puzzle-solving element was involved in the reveal.
“LoreFi is a secret project that I’ve had in the background,” he said. “I announced this back when I was doing the retirement videos, my announcement leaving the channel, and handing off the channels.”
The result of MatPat’s innovation will be the first-ever musical release under the Theorist brand. The company’s animation and music production teams came together to produce the result that kicks off on the 13th.
If you just want to listen to some relaxing music and don’t care so much about the attached intrigue, then you’re in luck. Beyond YouTube, LoreFi’s beats will also be available on other streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music.
