YouTube Integrating New Music Charts As Live Playlists In ‘YouTube Music’ App

YouTube wants to make the new music-focused charts it unveiled in May — ahead of the launch of the new YouTube Music app — more listenable for subscribers.

Soon, a total of five charts will roll out as live playlists within the YouTube Music app, which is currently available in 29 markets. Each country will get a total of five charts — three of which are nationwide, and two of which will track global trends.

First, the Top 100 Songs chart — which combines official music video, user-generated content, and lyric video views — will be available in both global and local iterations. Both local and global editions of the Top 100 Music Videos will also be available — updated

weekly on Sundays at 12 pm PT (as with the Top Songs chart). Finally, in each of YouTube Music’s 29 markets, a different Top 20 Trending chart will be available. This latter chart is updated multiple times daily, though — like the original ‘Trending’ tab — it is fairly unclear how exactly YouTube calculates placements.

“Fans can now easily access YouTube Charts as playlists that will appear on users’ home screens or by search,” YouTube Music product manager Elliott Breece wrote in a blog post. Users can also add charts to their libraries.

In the U.S., all three charts are currently being topped by Ariana Grande’s record-breaking “Thank U, Next.”
