With Hulu Biopic In The Works, RuPaul Sets Netflix Comedy ‘AJ And The Queen’

Another streaming service wants a piece of drag icon RuPaul Charles.

After reports surfaced last August that J.J. Abrams was developing a biopic series called Queen about the famed performer and TV host, Netflix has now tapped the 57-year-old for a fictional one-hour comedy series called AJ And The Queen. RuPaul co-wrote the series with Sex And The City showrunner and 2 Broke Girls creator Michael Patrick King, and both will serve as executive producers. King’s MPK Productions will produce the show alongside Warner Bros. Television.

In AJ And The Queen, RuPaul will play a down-on-her-luck drag queen named Ruby Red, who is touring the country with an unlikely

sidekick — a recently-orphaned 11-year-old named AJ. “Ruby’s message of love and acceptance winds up touching people and changing their lives for the better,” according to Netflix, which notes that RuPaul will perform a musical number in each of the 10 episodes.

RuPaul is also the host and creator of RuPaul’s Drag Race — an Emmy-winning reality series in which contestants compete for the title of ‘America’s Next Drag Superstar’ — which is currently in its 10th season on VH1. That show, which is produced by World Of Wonder, has turned several former contestants into beloved digital stars.
