Morgan Spurlock’s ‘Super Size Me’ Sequel Is Officially Coming To YouTube

YouTube’s latest foray into the world of prestige documentaries is uniting it with the man known for his searing takes on the fast food industry. The video platform has officially announced its acquisition of Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken, filmmaker Morgan Spurlock’s follow-up to his 2004 smash hit Super Size Me, which will be distributed through YouTube Red.

The deal, according to Deadline, is worth $3.5 million, as previously rumored. As part of the agreement, YouTube has picked up the global distribution rights to the film, which will have a theatrical release before it arrives online.

In the original Super Size Me, Spurlock punished his body by eating nothing but McDonald’s for a month, thus proving a point about the unhealthy nature of fast food. His sequel aims to show the other side of American consumption as he opens his own chicken restaurant in order to discern whether our meals really offer the nutritional value they claim. The new film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Spurlock took some time to share some words about his process:

“I’m ecstatic to be partnering with YouTube Red for the release of Super Size Me 2!” said Spurlock in a statement. “There’s no one better to help get this film in front of more people worldwide than these guys. They are going to blow this clucker up!”

YouTube Red has shared a number of compelling documentaries as part of its approach to original content. Its non-fiction library includes This Is Everything, about YouTube star Gigi Gorgeous, and Vlogumentary, which follows a number of top creators. Holy Chicken is expected to join those offerings and the rest of YouTube Red’s fare in 2018.
