Snapchat’s Latest AR Update Lets Users Insert Animated 3D Bitmojis Into Snaps

Snapchat is pushing further into augmented reality (AR) using Bitmoji — a product that enables users to create self-styled cartoon avatars — which parent company Snap acquired for a reported $100 million last year.

While Snapchat in April launched a product update called World Lenses, which enables users to insert animated stickers into photo and video Snaps using their rear-facing cameras, Bitmoji World Lenses will let users superimpose their Bitmojis into Snaps, Recode reports. Now, in addition to animated clouds and rainbows, for instance, users can see their Bitmojis — which can be showcased in different emotional states and participating in various activities — interacting with the world at large.

Snap’s initial push into AR arrived with its beloved selfie Lenses, Recode notes — though now the company is increasingly working to bring the technology into the world around us. Other companies have also hopped on the face-distorting bandwagon, including Facebook, Instagram, and Apple via the new iPhone X.
