Caroling is an integral part of the Christmas season, but it is also a bit old and stodgy, and many young people have no interested in that particular time-honored tradition. Who better, then, to re-imagine the Christmas carol than one of the hippest creators on the Internet? YouTube star Caspar Lee teamed up with retailer TK Maxx (the UK equivalent to TJ Maxx) for a new rendition of “Deck The Halls” that has some youthful energy to it.
Lee, along with a group of choir members, performed his version of “Deck The Halls” at London’s King’s Cross station. Musically, the reworked classic features an EDM influence and a beat-boxed backing track. Its lyrics, which Lee wrote under the tutelage of Welsh carol legend Aled Jones, reference tweeting, holiday sweaters, and snowballs — all the things the kiddies enjoy during this time of the year.
Speaking of holiday sweaters (or “jumpers,” since we are across the pond), Lee himself is well-equipped. In the video that accompanies his new Christmas jingle, he sports a particularly gaudy holiday outfit, which we can only assume was supplied by TK Maxx.
“I love surprising people and Christmas is the perfect time of year to do that, whether it’s popping in on your grandma unannounced or seeing someone’s face light up when they unwrap that gift they never expected,” said Lee in a press release. “Spreading a bit of Christmas surprise with my own choir has been a great way to start the season.”
Lee, who originally hails from South Africa, has close to seven million subscribers on his YouTube channel.
