Miranda Sings is putting her vocal teaching skills to the test. The fictional alter-ego of YouTube celebrity Colleen Ballinger tutored Sophia Grace Brownlee, known for her appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres show, in the ways of singing in a new collaboration video posted April 30, 2015.
The stand-off-ish Miranda starts the collaboration video by explaining how Brownlee has been singing a lot on the girl’s own channel, which boasts over 720,000 subscribers and more than 204 million video views to date. But Miranda thinks Brownlee can learn to perform better, and starts teaching the young celebrity “helpful” (read: poorly-pitched) vocal tips. In the end, Miranda turns Brownlee into her personal protege, complete with her own versions of Miranda’s signature purple sweater and overly-drawn red lips.
Brownlee originally rose to fame by attracting the attention of Ellen DeGeneres because of the girl’s viral Nicki Minaj cover video
(which currently has over 48 million views). After appearing on DeGeneres’ show, Brownlee launched a dedicated YouTube channel and started releasing her own music videos. Judging by Brownlee’s video uploads and a quick YouTube search, the young star’s clip with Miranda appears to be the first collaboration the Ellen celebrity has done with a fellow YouTuber.Ballinger’s character is also familiar with garnering the interest of traditional celebrities. Jerry Seinfeld learned about Miranda from his daughter, and invited the YouTube star to appear on his Crackle web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. Later, Seinfeld and Miranda played Pictionary against Martin Short and Jimmy Fallon on the late night host’s Tonight Show.
Miranda claims over 3.8 million subscribers on her channel, while Ballinger has more than 2.3 million on her own.
