The Slow Mo Guys To Appear In New Game From ‘Angry Birds’ Team

Rovio, the Finnish company behind Angry Birds, has a new video game out, and it will feature an appearance from YouTube’s most prominent slow motion aficionados. Thanks to a deal between YouTube and Rovio, 8-bit versions of the The Slow Mo Guys will appear in Rovio’s Retry, a side-scrolling mobile game now available for iOS and Android.

In Retry, players control a small plane, which they must steer onto series of runways. This proves to be a difficult challenge, since the plane’s controls are similar to those of Flappy Bird, the popular mobile game known for its extreme difficulty. The similarity to Flappy Bird is no accident; Rovio, which recently laid off 130 of its employees, is looking to find another hit franchise after striking gold with Angry Birds five years ago.

As the player steers his plane across Retry‘s landscape, he will occasionally fly past 8-bit versions of Gavin Free and Daniel Gruchy, who will appears next to in-game billboards advertising their Slow Mo Guys YouTube channel. That channel, which has more than 4.5 million subscribers, is part of YouTube’s creator-focused advertising campaign in the UK, which also highlights Zoella and Vice News.

“The fun, retro tone of the game and the target audience are a perfect fit to engage with fans of The Slow Mo Guys,” said Richard Waterworth, the head of YouTube consumer marketing for EMEA.

In addition to his work with The Slow Mo Guys, Free is also known as a member of gaming network Rooster Teeth. Therefore, many Retry gamers will be delighted to see his 8-bit face inside their mobile screens.
