Indie Spotlight: “Matt Dennie’s Character Project” Is A Weirdo’s World

We receive a ton of tips every day from independent creators, unaffiliated with any major motion picture studios, television networks, new media studios, or other well-funded online video entities. The Indie Spotlight is where we’ll write about and shout out to a select few of them and bring you up to speed on the great (and sometimes not-so-great) attention-grabbing series you probably haven’t heard about until now.  Read previous installments here

Some of our favorite Indie Spotlight entries are little more than a series of sketches tied together by a loose theme. Today’s featured series takes that concept to the extreme by focusing all of its episodes around characters written, created, and performed by one man: Matt Dennie. Dennie lends his name to the title of his new web series, Matt Dennie’s Character Project.

Dennie appeared in Indie Spotlight two months ago, when we featured Parting Words, a web series he starred in. As I wrote, each episode of Parting Words “feels like an isolated comedy sketch.” Character Project takes on a similar style, with Dennie acting out a different weirdo in each episode. In the first installment, he’s a vampire who will do whatever it takes to get invited into his neighbor’s apartment.

As Dennie explains on the official Character Project website, future episodes will build an interconnected world. “Each character in MDCP exists in the same world,” he writes. “Many of the characters know each other very well.” Of

course, he also writes that his series is “unofficially sponsored by Roscoe’s Pizza,” so who knows if we can take him at is world. At any rate, his first character is funny enough that I want to see what other ideas he has in his head.

OTHER UNDER-THE-RADAR SERIES TO CHECK OUT
