Indie Spotlight: ‘Parting Words’ Brings The Funny To Human Resources

We receive a ton of tips every day from independent creators, unaffiliated with any major motion picture studios, television networks, new media studios, or other well-funded online video entities. The Indie Spotlight is where we’ll write about and shout out to a select few of them and bring you up to speed on the great (and sometimes not-so-great) attention-grabbing series you probably haven’t heard about until now.  Read previous installments here

Every office has that one weird guy; Parting Words places him front and center. The new web series from New York-based comedian Adam Asher stars Matt Dennie as an HR representative whose inappropriate office demeanor and obsessive behavior is played out across a series of exit interviews.

As with many other independent web series emerging from New York, the cast of Parting Words is a cocktail composed of talent from the city’s top sketch, improv, and comedy writing gigs. Dennie is an Upright Citizen’s Brigade guy, and the actors who portray his interviewees have written or performed on shows like Late Night, The Late Late Show, and Girl Code. Each episode feels like an isolated comedy sketch, with Dennie’s Peter character conducting an exit interview with a different employee. The debut features J-L Cauvin as Peter’s nemesis (he earned that title thanks to a bowling-related slight.)

Parting Words stands out thanks to the web series landscape around it. With so many independent creators depicting the trials of young people who are attempting to

make it in the big city, it is nice to focus on someone who has already scored a decent job. For that reason alone, Peter is a fun character to watch, even if he acts like a total boob.

OTHER UNDER-THE-RADAR SERIES TO CHECK OUT

  • Brick House. This musical follows a man who tries to quit porn. Yes, I said musical.
  • Geek Cred. The employees at a comic book store deal with their interpersonal relationships, nerdy arguments, and their customers.
  • Boobsketball: The Jimmy And Randy Story. This web series applies the logic of a sports movie to a competition that involves tossing objects into female cleavage.
  • YOMO. Two women nearing their thirties begin the search for a perfect husband, because “You Only Marry Once”.
