We receive a ton of tips every day from independent creators, unaffiliated with any major motion picture studios, television networks, new media studios, or other well-funded online video entities. The Indie Spotlight is where we’ll write about and shout out to a select few of them and bring you up to speed on the great (and sometimes not-so-great) attention-grabbing series you probably haven’t heard about until now. Read previous installments here.
Many of the dishes served at dinner parties in the 50s and 60s now seem equal parts confusing and revolting, but at least one web series is making sure the kitchens of the 60s keep a spot in modern culture. Velveteen Lounge Kitsch-en is a half-satirical, half-earnest attempt to keep the world of the Baby Boom housewife alive in the 2010s.
The star of Velveteen Lounge Kitsch-en is Kelly Camille Patterson, who offers up recipes, party ideas, and travel tips in the guise of a big-eyed, sugary-voiced, kitschy homemaker with a permanent plastic smile on her face. Some of the episodes offer up actual advice and recipes, with viewers learning the secrets of themed cocktails, party plates, and retro fashion. Other episodes are entirely silly; one of the best installments of Velveteen Lounge Kitsch-en is a musical number singing the praises of “Lime Jell-O Marshmallow Cottage Cheese Surprise,” which sounds truly horrifying.
Velveteen Lounge Kitsch-en is primarily intended as a lovingly tongue-in-cheek celebration of a bygone era, but by wrapping this satire around an actual lifestyle advice program, the series becomes far more worthwhile. You should watch it for Patterson’s Stepford-y character and stick around for the useful household tips.
