Welcome to Fund This, a new column here at Tubefilter. Description: Outerlands is a six-episode documentary about video games. Obviously, it’s a little more complicated than that, but the basic gist is pretty simple. Each episode will be an hour long exploration of the history, trends, and personalities of the gaming world. Along the way, some of the most exciting video game developers working today will join the fun. The production team includes the minds behind some of the most acclaimed indie games of the past few years (titles like Braid, FEZ, and Sword and Sworcery).
Creator Bio: Outerlands is the brainchild of Area 5, a San Francisco-based studio with a penchant for gaming-themed media. Previous credits include popular video podcast The 1UP Show, review series CoOp, and a companion documentary for one of the best-received video games of 2013: Naughty Dog’s The Last Of Us. Should it reach its goal, Outerlands will serve as one of the five-man team‘s most ambitious productions.
Best Perk: If you pay $2000, you will get to commission an artwork from David Hellman, best known for creating the art for the warped, time-twisting world of Braid.
Why You Should Fund It: Outerlands is no amateur production. Area 5 know their video games, they’ve enlisted some of the most forward-thinking names in the business to join the project. The trailer reminds me of a more serious version of one of my favorite documentaries ever, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters.
Contributing to Outerlands also helps upholds what seems to be one of the series’ central goals. As the pitch video notes, video games are an art form that needs to be preserved, and a documentary that would glorify classic games seems like a good way to help preserve them. As a gamer, it’s a mission I find very worthwhile.
