‘Husbands’, ‘Lauren’, ‘Sylvia Plath’ Nominated At WGA Awards

Just two days after the Producers’ Guild of America announced the web series nominees for its annual awards show, the Writers’ Guild of America has done the same. In the Original New Media category, Husbands, Lauren, and Sylvia Plath: Girl Detective are all up for nomination.

The WGA first began handing out awards for new media writing back in 2010. Last year, it featured categories for both original and derivative online content. Michael Cyril Creighton’s Jack in the Box ended up bagging the top prize in the Original New Media category, while Cold Storage, the excellent Walking Dead web companion, triumphed in the Derivative New Media category.

This year, there is just one New Media category, and it continues to honor smaller, quieter series like Jack in the Box rather than some of the more bombastic, high-energy series (such as Epic Rap Battles of History

and Video Game High School) that are nominated at the PGA Awards. CW Seed‘s Husbands, which scored two of the four nominations, has to be considered the favorite, though a split vote could bring glory to WIGSLauren or the independently-released Sylvia Plath: Girl Detective.

Netflix’s series were once again well-represented in the traditional media categories. Most notably, Orange Is The New Black is nominated in three categories, one of the first of what will likely be many major nominations for Jenji Kohan’s critically-beloved dramedy.

The WGA Awards will go down on February 1st, 2014. Take the time between now and then to familiarize yourself with the new media nominees you may not have seen.
