We receive a ton of tips every day from independent creators, unaffiliated with any major motion picture studios, television networks, new media studios, or other well-funded online video entities. The Indie Spotlight is where we’ll write about and shout out to a select few of them and bring you up to speed on the great (and sometimes not-so-great) attention-grabbing series you probably haven’t heard about until now. Read previous installments here.
It’s easy for a low-budget web series to get stuck inside the head of its main protagonist. In such cases, the viewer is overloaded with the hero’s actions and feelings without regard to the other people in his or her life. Weblove has a simple solution to this common misstep. Instead of drilling down into the romantic life of one individual, it presents the comedic follies of two people on the way to meeting one another through online dating.
The three episodes
released thus far have basically been one half How I Met Your Mother and one half gender-flipped version of How I Met Your Mother, with the two paths destined to intersect at the center when our two main characters–recently dumped Ben and down-on-her-luck Jane–inevitably contact each other through the fictional, titular online dating service. The writing is solid, and the binary storyline prevents Weblove from falling too deeply into either Ben or Jane’s ‘path’.The actual themes of Weblove aren’t terribly groundbreaking, but it’s light and fun and easy to watch. Even though it’s easy to get a pretty good idea of how the series will end based on its current trajectory, it still cannot be thrown in the ‘just another romantic comedy web series’ category.
