Horror Master David Cronenberg Is Releasing A Virtual Reality Project

Have you ever wondered what life is like in a David Cronenberg film? Considering that the director’s most famous film follows its protagonist’s gruesome transformation into a fly, I think the safe answer is no, but a futuristic new project will provide this experience to those with a little more nerve than me. Cronenberg has teamed up with the Canadian Film Centre’s Media Lab for an interactive storytelling experience called Body/Mind/Change that will make use of “bio-tech recommendation engine” Personal On Demand (POD).

Cronenberg, known for his unique and often quite gross brand of horror filmmaking, will create an interactive story to help the initial POD users learn the ins and outs of the new device, which purports to ‘learn’ its users tendencies and offer recommendations based on those findings. “Working with David Cronenberg on Body/Mind/Change

was an amazing experience,” said Lance Weiler, creative director and experience designer of Body/Mind/Change. “With his participation we were able to create a layered story world that will immerse participants in his fiction as if it were reality.”

Body/Mind/Change will launch on October 25th. Until then, Cronenberg is hyping up the hi-tech device with a trailer that definitely has a ‘1984 Apple ad‘ vibe to it.

Futurists wishing to participate in the Body/Mind/Change project can sign up to receive their POD devices, with the mind-bending devices shipping out on a first come first serve basis. We hope Cronenberg sets off a trend of virtual reality filmmaking, because it’s awesome. If we’re lucky, Cronenberg will usher in a new era without having to explode a single head.
