#SMWLA Preview: Which Films Generate The Most Pre-Release Buzz?

From September 23-28, online companies, executives, and personalities will gather in Santa Monica for Social Media Week Los Angeles. To help showcase the incredible events that will be going down this year, Tubefilter will be offering daily previews of individual events. Check out the full schedule here and our schedule at a glance here.

Major motion picture distributors are obsessed with pre-release buzz. Engaging, slick trailers emerge many months before each film’s debut, specific Twitter feeds hype upcoming releases before anyone has seen them, and agencies enlist the help of online personalities for branded features highlighting specific films. In many ways, these buzz-building techniques can go a long way to erase the deficiencies of a subpar on-screen product, at least as far as opening weekend box office is concerned.

On September 26th, a Social Media Week Los Angeles event will explore the growing pre-release marketing industry. David Herrin, the Head of Research at United Talent Agency (UTA), will take the stage to discuss the various methods through which social media influences the development of a film’s popularity. Herrin will be particularly interested in discussing PreAct, a startup that turns pre-emptive marketing into a science.
