What Are YouTube And Spike Jonze Planning With Our Favorite Songs?

Spike Jonze is well-known for his work on music videos. Throughout his career, the acclaimed director has helmed more than 50 of them, including the ridiculous Christopher Walken-powered video for Fatboy Slim’s ‘Weapon of Choice’. Jonze is now bringing his music video acumen to YouTube. He has appeared in a video where he asks viewers to send him their favorite songs of 2013 to help him complete an as-of-yet unknown project.

Jonze’s request is simple: He wants to know which music videos or YouTube videos with music we enjoyed the most this year. Of course, simple oration will not be enough; instead, Jonze wants each respondent to sing, dance, or interact with his favorite tune in some meaningful way. He also extends an offer to discuss the songs we hated in 2013 (looking at you, Miley), and promises to consider any entry video so long as it is titled ‘Hi Spike‘ when it is uploaded to YouTube and is no longer than 30 seconds.

Jonze hasn’t revealed any information about the project, but it definitely seems like some sort of year-end mashup, and I’d be surprised if Jonze doesn’t cobble together various song and dance routines to form completed cover songs. There’s only one problem with this: 2013 is far from over. At this time last year, ‘Gangnam Style‘ hadn’t even gone viral yet; by the end of the year, it had one billion views.

The deadline to submit videos to the project is August 12th, so if you want to help Jonze identify our favorite songs, you had better get to work. As far as I’m concerned, if Jonze wants to find the best music video on YouTube, all he needs to do is click right here.
