‘Lizzie Bennet Diaries’ Team Will Take On Jane Austen’s ‘Emma’ Next

After scoring one of the biggest web series hits of 2012 with The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Streamy winner Bernie Su is ready to turn another Jane Austen classic into a witty, teen-friendly vlog. Su, along with producer Hank Green and the rest of Pemberley Digital, will soon release Emma Approved, a YouTube adaptation of Emma.

As with Lizzie Bennet and spin-off Welcome To Sanditon, Emma Approved will have a modern setting to fit with the vlog format. In this case, Emma Woodhouse will be a confident and proud female entrepreneur who, like the literary version, will believe she is an excellent matchmaker. Given that short character profile, we can assume Emma will have the same wealth and hubris she possesses in the book.

Emma Approved will launch in the fall, and like its predecessors, it will

utilize many transmedia elements. The presence of Emma’s business opens up the potential for a huge fictional world similar to the one created on Theatrics for Sanditon. If Su decides to take that route again, the so-called Seahorses, Pemberlings, and the LBD fandom at large will eat it up.

Of course, the Seahorses are no doubt ecstatic with the choice, especially since some of them have already made their own fan adaptations of Emma. Personally, I would’ve been happy with any of the seven books I proposed when speculating about what Su and Green would do next. By choosing Emma, they have stayed in their comfort zone. It shouldn’t be too hard for them to repeat the Lizzie Bennet formula, and that alone ensures another smash hit adaptation.
