Must-Watch Music Videos: Alice And The Glass Lake Takes Us ‘Higher’

[Editor’s Note: Two major trends have emerged in the recent history of new media: 1) Music videos are the new music and 2) YouTube is the new MTV. With that in mind and to keep you up to speed with the greatest and latest in this online video category, Tubefilter has partnered with INDMUSIC, YouTube’s largest independent music network, to bring you at least one must-watch music video every week. Turn up your volume and we hope you enjoy the analysis, sites, and sounds. For more Must-Watch Music Video installments, click here.]

Recently featured as one of Pigeons and Planes 12 Female Artists You Should Know, Alice and The Glass Lake is dreamy pop music layered in the sonic dream world of Alice Lake.  The imagery she uses in her songs is borrowed from the glassy Wisconsin lakes of her childhood.  The artist, now based in NYC, has proven to be both unique in her songwriting style and versatile in her ability to make shapes appear out of nowhere (and shapes are awesome).  Her music harnesses all the greatest things about escapism and the surreal way in which you have to marry that to reality; it is, in her own words, “the lens through which [she] lives her dreams.”

The new video for ‘Higher‘ blends vibrant instrumentation with smooth seductive hooks and a forceful delivery.  At its core, ‘Higher’ is a performance video.  It showcases Alice Lake’s implicit relationship to her music and her past and the way she can draw you in and make you experience something too.  It’s all in her performance.  She can rest in the melody then erupt into the hooks, bringing into focus a simple yet powerful music video.
