Blip is slowly lifting the curtain on its Digital Content NewFronts slate, and the newest project revealed by the premium content site sounds positively super. The Great S. Cape!, a superhero series helmed by Batman producer Michael Uslan, will be a modern rendition of the campy serial films of years past.
Uslan has had a producing role in every Batman film since Tim Burton’s 1989 revival of the franchise. That means he can claim a credit in The Dark Knight, widely regarded as one of the greatest superhero films of all time. Unfortunately, he’s equally responsible for Batman & Robin, so you win some, you lose some. Aside from his work with the Caped Crusader, Uslan has also consulted on a number of other superhero movies and teaches a course of comic book folklore. The dude knows his superheroes.
As for his own work, Uslan is planning The Great S. Cape! as an old-school tribute to the episodic, unsubtle, serial films that were popular during the Golden Age of comic books. “The Great S. Cape! marks the triumphant return of the chapter-by-chapter Saturday matinee movie serial of old that was dominated by superheroes like Batman, Superman and Captain America,” Uslan told The Hollywood Reporter. “Original web series are at the cutting edge of the entertainment industry, and working with Blip I can reach audiences in new ways with more immersive characters and stories.”
Uslan joined Rob Huebel as one of Blip’s new creators. Details surrounding the studio’s other ten upcoming series will be revealed at DCNF later this month.
